WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team kicked off their week long stay in Florida on Saturday with a split against the Tigers of the Rochester Institute of Technology at Lake Myrtle Park. The Red and White were upended 10-2 in game one, before getting back on track with a 13-3 victory in game two.
Game One: Tigers 10, DEVILS 2 (F/7)
Time of Game: 2:30
Pitching Decision: W - John Arnold (1-0) | L -
Ethan Hamilton (1-1)
Inside the Game
The Tigers began the game quick with a leadoff double and two singles giving them a 1-0 lead, before Hamilton notched a strikeout. Charlie Slaymaker then collected a single making it 2-0 through one. RIT stretched it out to 3-0 during the second thanks to back-to-back knocks from Sam Kulp and Randy Dodig. Dickinson had a chance to get on the board in the home-half of the frame as hits by
Ryan Thompson and
Josh Markley were followed by a walk for
Ethan Sodl to fill the bags with two down. Unfortunately,
Dylan Posencheg would flyout to right for the final out. In the top of the third, a single and DC fielding error left runners on the corners with two away. That set the stage for a two-run double from Trent Rapp and an RBI single by Mikey Zacher pushed it out to 6-0 through two and a half. Arnold would hurl a solid bottom-half getting a double-play and a flyout for the shutdown frame.Â
The game would enter the fifth with the same score, but would quickly change as Rapp sent the
Nathan Weisoly pitch over the fence. That was followed by two free passes and a single to load the cushions for Jarin Moses who picked up a two-run single extending the margin to 9-0 with five in the books. RIT pushed it out to 10-0 an inning later when a two-bagger for Rapp and a walk to Zacher gave Dodig to opportunity to drive in one more. Dickinson finally nabbed some runs during the last of the sixth as a single for
George Thorp set the stage for Markley to produce a double driving home Thorp, during that same play an error on the catcher allowed Markley to sprint home as well trimming it down to the final score of 10-2.Â
Devils Mound Report
Hamilton got the start going 2.2 innings allowing ten hits, six runs (three earned) to go along with five strikeouts and no walks. Weisoly was first out of the pen lasting 2.1 frames issuing two walks and giving up four hits and three runs.
Drew Norton and
Zach Wernick each followed with one inning of relief combining for three hits allowed, two strikeouts and a run.
Game Two: DEVILS 13, Tigers 3
Time of Game: 2:30
Pitching Decision: W -
Koll Peichel (3-0) | L - Eric Sipling (1-2)
Inside the Game
After a quiet top of the first for the Devils, RIT had the first four batters reach to plate one on a double by Moses. Two batters later Rapp was safe on an error allowing two more to score opening up a 3-0 advantage through one. Dickinson answered back in the top of the second with one as
Matt Torres singled, before
Johnny Bruno drove him in with single of his own. A walk to Posencheg had two on with two out, but
Christian Kim bounced into an inning ending double-play to retire the side. The pitchers then settled in as the game stayed at 3-1 into the fourth until two-out knocks by Posencheg and Kim as well as a walk to
Luke Gartland filled the bags for
Kenny Tagliareni. He would earn an RBI the hard way by getting hit by RIT starter Matt Chase cutting it down to 3-2 entering the fifth.
In that frame a one-out walk to Torres sent Chase to the bench and brought out Sipling from the bullpen. The first man he faced was Thompson who deposited the Sipling offering over the wall to give the Red and White a 4-3 lead. Dickinson then added onto their edge during the sixth as a one-out free pass to Tagliareni came into score on a single for Markley. A double from
Kaden Sigmon and intentional walk to Thompson kept the DC threat going as the bases were filled for Bruno. He stepped into the box and got a big hold of the pitch from Sipling as he pounded a grand slam to stretch the advantage out to 9-3 going to the last of the sixth.
Joey Sangiuolo went to the mound in place of Peichel and allowed two men to reach with one gone, but then recorded back-to-back groundouts to end any potential rally. The Devils were not done scoring however, as a walk to Tagliareni came around to score on a knock for Markley. That was followed by a single for Sigmon to put two on with two down for Torres who blasted the Jacob Statman pitch out of the park to open up a 13-3 cushion entering the "last call" for the Tigers. Sangiuolo shut the door on any hopes the Tigers had as he recorded a groundout to shortstop and a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Devils Mound Report
Peichel began the game and continued his stellar start to the year going five innings allowing three runs (one earned) over seven hits and fanning five. Sangiuolo closed out the contest with two innings of one hit relief along with three K's.
