TUSCON, Ariz. - The Dickinson softball team continued their Spring Break trip in Arizona on Tuesday with two more games against a pair of California institutions as they squared off with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Whittier College. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they suffered a pair of five-inning defeats falling 10-2 and 14-6 at Lincoln Park.
Game One: Stags 10, DEVILS 2
Time of Game: 1:40
Pitching Decision: W - Ella Yerkes (1-0) | L -
Kaylie Renner (0-1)
Inside the Game
The Stags took the early lead in the last of the first as Renner set down the first two hitters, before an error and two hits provided CMS with the 2-0 lead after one. Dickinson responded against Yerkes during the top of the second as a single from Renner, error caused off the bat of
Zoe Kleeblatt and free pass drawn by
Emily Whelan filled the bags. Then with two gone, a bases loaded walk to
Jessie Sandusky trimmed it to 2-1. That was followed by an RBI single from
Jane Lloyd to knot the game, but the final out would be recorded at home as a DC runner was cut down to leave it at 2-2 heading to the home-half. Unfortunately, for the Devils the tie was short-lived as with one away, CMS had the next seven players reach base safely leading to five more coming across with the biggest play in the frame being a bases-loaded triple for Giselle Lai making it 7-2. The bottom half saw
Emma Glosson walk with one out, but Renner hit into an inning-ending double play moving the game to the last of the third. An early leadoff strikeout for Renner gave the Red and White hope for an all-important shutdown inning. However, three straight singles set the stage for Delanie Stevens to be safe on a DC error letting one more come home stretching it 8-2, before reliever
Abby Kohan got Madison Gonzalez to hit into a double play pushing it to the fourth. Dickinson could not mount any more of an offensive threat the remainder of the game as the Red and White went "six-up, six-down", while a sacrifice fly for Paige Zimmerman in the fourth and an RBI single by Destiny Garcia an inning later made the margin 10-2 ending the game after five.
Devils Circle Report
Renner hurled the first 2.1 innings giving up 10 hits and eight runs (four earned) to go along with one strikeout and a walk. In relief, Kohan fired two frames surrendering two runs over four knocks and one K.
Game Two: Poets 14, DEVILS 6
Time of Game: 1:30
Pitching Decision: W - Daryanna Ductoc (1-1) | L -
Marah Goldman (0-1)
Inside the Game
For the second game on the day the Devils went behind in the first as a single and hit batter had two on with one away for Maya Palos. She stepped into the box and collected a two-run double, before being thrown out trying to reach third. The Poets would try to add-on with a walk and single putting two more on the bases, but Goldman got a flyout to retire the side. Dickinson once again would be able to produce an early rally as knocks for
Eden Blanker and Kohan had players on the corners with two down. That brought
Erin McMahon to the dish and she would reach on an error by the shortstop allowing one runner to come home, prior to Kleeblatt collecting an RBI single to knot the game at 2-2 entering the second. With two-on and two-out, back-to-back two-baggers for Marissa Flynn and Palos allowed Whittier to open up a 5-2 edge going to the last of the frame. The Red and White answered with one during the bottom-half as Lloyd was safe on an error in left, followed by Kohan posting an RBI single to cut it down to 5-3 through two.
In the third, things started to slip away for DC as seven hits by the Poets resulted in seven runs coming home with RBIs coming from Contreras, Flynn, Perry, Stell and Wolf to extend their advantage out to 12-3. Ductoc then provided a clean bottom part of the frame by retiring Renner, McMahon and Kleeblatt in order. An RBI triple by Wolf and run producing groundout for Luna during the top of the fourth made it 14-3 entering the last of the fifth. Two Whittier miscues let Lloyd and Blanker reach allowing, Kohan who had singled earlier to score. Later in the frame, Kleeblatt and
Emily Whelan came up with RBI singles to make the score 14-6, before
Lauren Routzahn went down on strikes to end the game.
Devils Circle Report
Goldman was tasked with going the distance giving up 14 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits over five innings, while striking out two.
The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (0-6) will take today off, before going back in search of their first win(s) of the season on Thursday against the University of Hartford and the University of Texas-Dallas.
