WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Dickinson baseball team wrapped up a busy week in Florida on Friday afternoon by suffering a pair of defeats to the Coe College Kohawks by scores of 10-4 and 7-1 at the Lake Myrtle Field Complex.
Game One: Kohawks 10, DEVILS 4
Time of Game: 2:00
Pitching Decision: W - Ethan O'Donnell (2-0) | L -
Ben Myers (1-1)
Inside the Game
After each team was set down in order during the first, Coe would get on the board in the top of the second as a hit batter and double allowed for CJ Johnson to make it 1-0. Dickinson continued to struggle finding offense early in the game as the Red and White were held hitless through the opening three innings. Unfortunately, that gave the Kohawks the opportunity to add onto their advantage during the fourth when the first four batters of the frame reached safely against Myers allowing for two more to come home opening up a 3-0 lead. That was the end of the day for Myers as he was replaced by
Charlie Bien who surrendered a two-run double to Kaden Haller making it 5-0 through three-and-a-half. Then, in the home-half of the inning a double by
Dylan Posencheg, followed by a failed pickoff attempt put a man on third for
Kaden Sigmon who provided a sacrifice fly to left cutting the margin to 5-1 with four in the books.
With men at first and second for Kohawks with two out in the fifth, Creighton Kreshel and Mitchell Eckardt each produced RBI singles driving home three more runs to the ledger for the 8-1 lead still with runners at the corners. That was when a stolen base for Eckardt and an error by DC let the ninth run of the game come in (9-1). Dickinson would pull one back during their chance as a two-out free pass to
Luke Gartland came around to score three batters later when
Nathan Bowman smacked an RBI single. The game stayed at 9-2 entering the seventh, when a single and walk issued by reliever
Matteo George set the stage for Kreshel to extend the margin to 10-2. George then settled down to get out of the inning striking out one and forcing an inning-ending double-play. The Red and White grabbed two during "last call" in the bottom of the seventh as
Ethan Sodl reached on a fielder's choice, before
Johnny Bruno sent the Tyce Johnson offering over the wall for the 10-4 final.
The Devils Mound Report
Myers gave up five hits and five runs over three innings, while striking out four. Bien lasted two frames allowing four hits to go along with four runs (three earned) as well as four K's. George whiffed three hitters over his two innings, but also conceded one run.
Game Two: Kohawks 7, DEVILS 1
Time of Game: 2:00
Pitching Decision: W - CJ Johnson (1-1) | L -
Austin Buzza (1-1)
Inside the Game
Dickinson had a chance to get on the board in the top of the first with a single for
Ryan Thompson and walk to
Matt Torres putting two men on, but Gartland hit into a fielder's choice to retire the side. Two strikeouts by Buzza would not be enough to prevent Coe from cracking the scoreboard as a single by Eckardt eventually came around to score on a knock by Reid Rausch. The continued to threaten in each of the next two innings having a pair of base runners, but could not drive anyone in. That would unfortunately open the door for the Kohawks to pickup three more during the bottom of the third thanks to a pair of RBI singles and a wild pitch making it 4-0.
The Red and White collected their first run of the game in the top of the fourth as
Chase Weller tripled and Bruno walked to have runners on the corners. That brought
Christian Kim to the dish who brought in one with an RBI single. However, a caught stealing and groundout let Coe off the hook from any further damage. Three consecutive singles in the home-half of the frame allowed Coe to pull the run back opening the gap to 5-1 with four complete. The Kohawks rounded out the scoring an inning later when a triple, walk and hit batter loaded the bags with no one out. That sent Austin Gomez to the dish who delivered a two-run single off of new pitcher
Joey Sangiuolo pushing it to 7-1. Dickinson would muster two runners during the bottom of the seventh, but could not bring anyone home as a strikeout ended the game.
The Devils Mound Report
Buzza lasted 3.2 innings allowing nine hits and five runs, while striking out seven. Sangiuolo tossed just a third of a frame giving up two runs on two hits to go along with a K. Glen Catalupo Jr. went two innings of hitless relief with a trio of strikeouts.
The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (9-3) will try to once again have their home opener on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30pm when they welcome local rival Messiah University to MacPhail Field for non-conference action.
