OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The fourth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team got offensive contributions from eight different players and received a solid performance in net by
Patrick Scarborough to secure another win over a nationally-ranked opponent knocking off the 11th-ranked York College of Pennsylvania by a score of 11-8 on Day Two of the Mustang Classic at Stevenson University.
York needed less than a minute to find the first marker of the day when Coleton Mahorney skipped a shot past
Patrick Scarborough. Dickinson had an immediate answer about two minutes later as
Ben Monroe found
Sascha Gannon, which was then followed by
Matt Thurston hitting
Cullen Mulhern for the goal and a 2-1 lead with less than nine minutes left. Just about a minute after that Collin Williams snuck out from behind Jack Keller's cage and stuck the rock past him pushing it to 3-1. The Red and White extended their run to four and five on markers by
Charlie Baughan and Thurston, while at the other end of the field Scarborough made two stops one each on Jack Grayson and Will Harnick to leave it at 5-1 through 15-minutes.
The first shot of period number two came courtesy of long-pole
Evan Karetsos who was denied by Keller, allowing Jackson Hines, Grayson and Harnick to cash in on the offensive end cutting it to 5-4 with 6:30 to play as the Spartans limited the Devils to just two other shots during that time one each by
Josh Smith and
Ben Trucksess. Dickinson would press hard for their first goal of the frame later on, but Gannon and Williams missed the target, while
Ben Monroe rang the iron. Then, with just seven seconds remaining York had an opportunity to draw level heading to halftime, however Garrett Keogh was turned away by Scarborough.
For the second quarter in the game, it was the Spartans that got the quick start as Jackson Shields completed the comeback just 15-seconds into the third, but
Sam Campbell capitalized 24-ticks later to reclaim the lead for the Red and White at 6-5. He then added another one to his tally at the 2:24 mark off a nice feed by Gannon. Dickinson continued to pepper the area around Keller with
Mac Childs, Mulhern and Thurston all letting shots go towards cage with two of them finding paydirt stretching it out to 9-5 prompting York to bring in Nash Womack between the pipes with not even five minutes gone. Following a stop by Scarborough against Harnick, the Devils put three shots towards Womack, but none of them hit the mark. The Spartans finally dented the DC defense again when Davis Fisher tallied, which was followed by Keogh (2) cutting the deficit down to 9-8 still with 1:47 to play. Dickinson had one last chance to grab one more entering the fourth, unfortunately,
Luke Whalen clanged off the post to send the game to the fourth.
Dickinson had the first five shots of the fourth with Womack making a pair of stops against
Carter Wilmot and Gannon, before Thurston stuffed one past the keeper with a great individual effort just over three minutes in. The Red and White continued to be snake-bitten from finding the target as another post and two more stops by Womack kept the game at 10-8, until Gannon launched a cross-wing pass to Baughan who ripped one into the cage for the 11-8 advantage with 8:43 off the clock. The remainder of the game was tightly contested on the defensive ends of the turf as there would be just one more shot between the teams when Shields had an offering blocked down by the Devils to lockup the victory.
