SALEM, Va. - The Dickinson baseball team got multi-RBI games out of five players en route to a doubleheader sweep to open up a three-game weekend series with the host Roanoke College Maroons winning by scores of 9-2 and 16-4 at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
Game One - DEVILS 9, Maroons 2
Time of Game: 3:00
Pitching Decision: W -
Ethan Hamilton (1-0) | L - Jackson Murphy (0-3) | S -
Joey Sangiuolo (1)
Inside the Game
Hamilton would run into trouble early as two singles and a walk filled the bags with one down, but Hayden Giordano and Liam Murphy were both retired to end the first. The Maroons struck with two gone in the second when Patrick Stallard sent one over the fence to make it 1-0 heading to the third. In the top-half of the frame,
Johnny Bruno was hit,
Luke Gartland was safe on an error and
Nathan Bowman worked out a free pass to load the bases against Murphy with just one down. That was when
Kaden Sigmon plated two with a double, followed by a sac fly for
Matt Torres making it 3-1. After
Ryan Thompson was hit by a pitch, he would swipe second allowing Sigmon to race home on a throwing error by the catcher to leave it at 4-1 to the home-half. A DC error and balk placed a man at second with two gone. That set the stage for Giordano to split the left-centerfield gap to drive in one closing to within 4-2 through three.
The game stayed that way into the fifth when back-to-back flyouts from Sigmon and Torres led to a single for Thompson, before
Chase Weller smashed the Murphy offering into left-center extending the margin to 5-2. Dickinson added on during the sixth when a double for Gartland and a walk drawn by
Kenny Tagliareni had two one with one out for Bowman. He would not face Murphy however, as southpaw Anthony Sullivan entered the contest and walked his first batter to load the cushions with Devils. Sigmon then delivered a sac fly to center for the 6-2 advantage. Following a pair of singles by the Maroons in the bottom of the sixth,
Joey Sangiuolo took over on the hill for the Red and White. He would hit Nate Prince to load the bases, but then got a strikeout and popout to retire the side. Dickinson added another one during the seventh with a leadoff double by Thompson coming in to score with the next batter when Weller smacked a single to right-center (7-2). Sangiuolo continued a strong day by posting five more strikeouts over the next two frames to move things to the ninth. The Devils picked up two more runs in the final frame to cap the scoring as Torres homered to left and
Christian Kim notched an RBI double to plate pinch-hitter
Will Ferris who walked a batter earlier to set the 9-2 result.
Devils Mound Report
Hamilton went the first 5.1 innings allowing seven hits and just two runs (one earned), while striking out four and walking two over 121 pitches thrown. Sangiuolo locked up the three inning save thanks to giving up just one hit and whiffing six on 24 pitches.Â
Game Two - DEVILS 16, Maroons 4
Time of Game: 3:20
Pitching Decision: W -
Glen Cantalupo Jr. (1-0) | L - Trevor Orth (0-1)
Inside the Game
Dickinson had a chance to strike in the first as three walks filled the bags with just one out, but both Thompson and Weller struck out against Wes Hellings. Two batters into the home-half of the inning Roanoke had a 1-0 lead as Justyn Steens doubled to left, before the next man Tucker Schiavoni brought him in. Over the next two frames DC would not get much going offensively, but at the same time starter
Austin Buzza settled down to just one hit to go along with two strikeouts and forcing a double play to hold things where they were entering the fourth.Â
A double by Weller and a dropped third strike wild pitch against Kim had two on with no one out for
Dylan Posencheg. He would impact the game with an RBI two-bagger to center, which was followed two batters later by a sac fly for Tagliareni to give Dickinson a 2-1 edge to the bottom-half. A leadoff walk to Corey Coogan came around to bite Buzza when Nate Chown drove him home with a triple to tie the game heading to the fifth. The hosts reclaimed the advantage in the fifth as a walk and back-to-back DC miscues loaded the bases bringing
Brian Riley into the contest. He worked a fielder's choice out of Spencer Rhoads to give up one, but that was it making the score 3-2 after five.
The game stayed like that until the top of the seventh when a two-bagger for Sigmon was followed by Torres reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman allowing the tying run to score. That was the spark for the Dickinson offense as they went on to add six runs during the eighth. Two walks, a single and a fielder's choice had the pillows filled with Devils for Tagliareni. Both he and Bowman worked out RBI walks off of Orth to make it 5-3. That spelled the end of the day for Orth as Isaac Brooks entered and gave up consecutive two-run knocks to Sigmon and Torres pushing the margin to 9-3 through seven-and-a-half. After the Maroons pulled one back in the eighth, the Devils would completely open things up during the ninth with seven more runs. First, two walks and a hit batter allowed
Ryan O'Connor to pick up a bases-loaded walk, before RBI singles for Bowman and Tagliareni as well as a sac fly by Sigmon extended the gap to 13-4. Dickinson would add three more in the frame when two came across on a throwing error, while a balk called against the pitcher plated the 16th of the game for the 16-4 final.
Devils Mound Report
Buzza got the start going four frame surrendering four hits and three runs, while walking five in addition to fanning four (77 pitches). Riley (24 pitches) and Cantalupo (37 pitches)Â each went two innings combining to give up just one run on five hits and striking out three. Weisoly closed out the contest by pitching the ninth posting one strikeout on 19 pitches.
