LANCASTER, Pa. – The seventh-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team used a well-balanced offensive and defensive effort on Wednesday night to knock off the rival Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats by a score of 13-6 at Shadek Stadium in Centennial Conference action.
F&M was on the attack early after a giveaway from Dickinson led to chances from Colin Hueston and Ryan Roberts which resulted in one stop by the reigning CC Defensive Player of the Week
Patrick Scarborough. That allowed the Red and White to go back down the field and cash in through
Owen Porter off a feed from
Skyler Schluter. The two sides traded the ensuing six shots, before
Cullen Mulhern put the ball in the stick of
Mac Childs for the finish making it 2-0 with 7:44 left. After offerings from
Matt Thurston (2) and
Luke Whalen went off the mark, the Diplomats took advantage of another visitors giveaway with Jackson Barnhill hitting the net. Two minutes later
Liam Carney scored pushing it 3-1, before Sage Garito turned aside Porter at the 10:26 mark. The home side thought they were going into the second period trimming the gap to 3-2 on a marker for Mason Montrella, but off the faceoff win by
John McKee, Schluter found
Sascha Gannon coming out of the sub box for the rip giving DC a 4-2 edge after one. Â Â
The home team had the first three chances of the second tasking Scarborough with making just one stop when he denied Kai Kelly just over two minutes in. Then, Dickinson took advantage of a man-up opportunity when Mulhern hit Schluter for the goal followed a minute later the Devils "quick strike" offense thanks to Porter and Mulhern stretching the gap to 7-2 with six minutes gone prompting a home timeout. Coming out of the rest Montrella rang the post, while at the other end of the field Thurston fired wide and Carney clanged one off the iron. The Devils defense was strong the remainder of the quarter as the long-pole defensive pair of
Ethan Ackerman and
Capp Reynolds combined to force three turnovers, but Hueston was able to tally once more to cut the deficit down to four (7-3) at the break.
Each keeper was tested early in the third as Garito stopped a trio of attempts from Porter, while Scarborough was in perfect position to tell Hueston "no" to keep the score at 7-3 with over seven minutes off the clock. After Gannon was unable to capitalize on his chance, the Diplomats finally broke the scoreless run for both teams when Kelly hit Dillion Mannix for the tally with 9:38 gone. F&M attempted to keep the pressure up as Kelly and Montrella let shots fly towards goal, but neither hit the mark. That gave the Devils the opportunity to find their footing with Thurston making it 8-4, before Childs tickled the twine off the dish from Carney to open the advantage to 9-4 with just over two minutes to play. Scarborough had to make two more stops in the period to preserve the five-goal cushion shutting down both Kelly and Montrella.
Dickinson wasted little time in extending their lead as
Sam Campbell bested Garito off the opening faceoff win by McKee. Following a stop by Garito on Reynolds, Scarborough once again put on a clinic between the pipes denying both Kyle Russell and Mannix. That gave the Red and White another chance to add onto their lead with Childs burying the rock, prior to the Diplomats finally denting the Scarborough armor again thanks to Kelly. F&M then brought a familiar name into the game as Scarborough's younger brother Teddy Scarborough took over in cage. He was immediately put under duress as
Luke Whalen and McKee sandwiched a marker by Jack Luviano to leave it at 13-6 with less than four minutes to play. First-year
Rocco Bognet was placed between the pipes to finish out the game seeing his first collegiate action.
