Devils Showcase Offensive Firepower in DH Sweep of Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Dickinson baseball team opened up their Centennial Conference slate on Saturday with a bang as they pounded out 32 hits and racked up 30 runs en route to a dominating sweep of the host Washington College Shoremen winning by scores of 17-6 and 13-3 both in seven innings at Athey Park.

Game One: DEVILS 17, Shoremen 6 (F/7)
Records: Dickinson (12-5, 1-0 CC) | Washington (5-17, 0-1 CC)
Time of Game: 2:36
Pitching Decision: W - Austin Buzza (3-2) | L - Izaiah Santiago (0-6)

Inside the Game
Following a scoreless first, both starters would be tagged for a run during the second as a single from Kaden Sigmon and walk to Luke Gartland led to a two-out RBI single for Christian Kim off of Santiago. However, a pair of singles allowed Reese Hirsh to provide a sacrifice fly to left knotting the game through two. Then, in the third, a single for Kenny Tagliareni and walk to Dylan Posencheg had two on with one gone. After Sigmon was safe on an error to plate one, Matt Torres ripped a single to center making it 3-1. Free passes to Josh Markley and Gartland filled the pillows for Kim who worked the third straight walk driving it one for the 4-1 edge. The next man up was Nathan Bowman and he smashed a two-bagger to center clearing the bags making it 7-1 going to the last of the third. Buzza was unable to post the shutdown inning though as an infield single came around to score on a double by Logan Yi (7-2). Dickinson continued to add onto their advantage during the fourth with a walk to Posencheg and single for Sigmon having men on the corners with one down. Santiago was then replaced by Lucas Ward who walked both Torres and Gartland to plate another one, before Kim was plunked stretching the gap to 9-2. Buzza would produce the needed shutdown frame in the last of the fourth with two strikeouts and a lineout. Dickinson continued to pile on an inning later as a walk to Tagliareni scored a on double by Posencheg, followed by a two-bagger for Ryan Thompson making it 11-2. Sigmon singled to put men on the corners, before Torres, Markley and Gartland combined for three straight hits resulting in four more coming across opening it up to 15-2. That led to another new arm entering the fray for Washington as John Antonio III took to the hill. He would allow a single to Kim, sac fly for Bowman and RBI knock to Thompson pushing the DC advantage to 17-2 after five.

After a variety of changes in the field by the Devils to begin the last of the sixth, Charlie Bien took over for Buzza and immediately surrendered a solo homer to Drew Kinsey to trim it down to 17-3. He then settled down to allow no more damage recording two groundouts and a flyout. The Shoremen cut a little further into the deficit an inning later against two more DC relievers as Matteo George gave up two walks and a two-run single by Yi, prior to Nathan Weisoly issuing two straight walks later in the frame to force on across. However, he then got Pete Kokinis to watch strike three thus ending the game at 17-6.

Devils Mound Report
Buzza earned the win after tossing five innings allowing five hits and two runs to go along with four strikeouts over 82 pitches. Bien threw one inning of relief giving up a run on two hits (18 pitches). George was the third man out of the pen lasting just 0.1 on a frame letting three cross on one knock and picking up a strikeout (24 pitches). Weisoly finished off the last 0.2 of an inning with two strikeouts and a pair of walks (24 pitches).

Game Two: DEVILS 13, Shoremen 3 (F/7)
Records: Dickinson (14-5, 2-0 CC) | Washington (5-18, 0-2 CC)
Time of Game: 2:15
Pitching Decision: W - Koll Peichel (5-0) | L - Matt Herbert (3-5)

Inside the Game
Herbert hit immediate trouble in the top of the first as with one out a single for Posencheg and walk to Thompson set the stage for back-to-back RBI base hits by Sigmon and Torres for a 2-0 lead. Two batters later Gartland smacked a two-run single to left for a 4-0 edge just one-half an inning in. Two strikeouts and a flyout posted by Peichel in the bottom-half kept it at 4-0 heading to the second. Dickinson colleceted four more runs in the top of the second off of new arm Nico DiGrazio as with two in scoring position, Sigmon grounded out to first to drive in one. After a wild pitch with Torres in the box, Thompson hustled home from third after walking earlier in the inning. Torres then reached on an error and Markley legged out an infield hit, before Gartland smoked a triple into right plating both for the 8-0 lead through two. The third inning saw DC pick up one more run when walks to Tagliareni and Posencheg chased DiGrazio from the game and brought on Matt Bishop. He conceded an infield hit to Thompson allowing Tagliareni to race home for the 9-0 advantage through three. The Devils still were not done as in the fourth three more men scored on four hits. First, with one out Kim blasted his first homer of the season. He was followed by a single for Bowman, prior to Posencheg ripping a triple into right-field plating one. Later in the frame a wild pitch allowed Posencheg to race home for a 12-0 lead going to the fifth.

In the home-half of the inning the Washington offense finally came to life against Peichel who had been outstanding through the first four frames giving up just three hits and striking out four. After he retired the leadoff batter, an error, single and hit batter filled the cushions for Will Turner. During his at-bat a wild pitch resulted in the second out of the inning as Nick Miller was thrown out at home plate. However, an RBI single by Turner, followed by a two-run double for Yi cut it down to 12-3 heading to sixth. Dickinson would be setdown one-two-three in the top of the sixth leading to Brian Riley taking over on the hill in the bottom-half. He allowed a double to Alex Dardaris, but got three flyouts to end the inning. The Red and White picked up their 13th run of the game during the seventh thanks to a walk and three singles, before Joey Sangiuolo posted a scoreless home-half to end the game.

Devils Mound Report
Peichel was excellent on the day as he remained perfect on the season tossing five innings scattering seven hits allowing three runs (none earned), while striking out four on 72 pitches. Riley (18 pitches) and Sangiuolo (19 pitches) each hurled one frame of one-hit shutout relief with Sangiuolo also recording two Ks.
