OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The fifth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team outscored the hosts Stevenson University by a 9-1 margin in the second half to break open a 6-5 Mustangs edge and turn it into a 14-6 non-conference win at Mustang Stadium on a rain-soaked Saturday night.
After an early stop by
Patrick Scarborough on Ryan Quinn, the Devil offense went to work with both
Ethan Gess and
Skyler Schluter solving Justin Scorese for a 2-0 lead just over two minutes in. A miscue by the DC offense, the home side work themselves onto the board with an individual effort from Grant Zick. Dickinson continued to fire away towards cage with offerings by
Sam Bunten,
Sascha Gannon,
James Isaacson Cullen Mulhern and
Matt Thurston forcing three more saves out of Scorese. The Red and White finally dented the keeper once again with Thurston putting forth a solo finish making it 3-1. Dickinson tried to add one more prior to the end of the period, but Gess hit a post and missed just wide to send the game to the second.
The visitors kept up the pressure to start the second by recording the first five shots of the frame with
Ethan Ackerman, Isaacson, Mulhern and Thurston going wide, while Schluter setup Gess to stretch the margin out to 4-1. Then with 3:53 off the clock,
Evan Karetsos was called for a two-minute full-time penalty, which led almost immediately to the second of the day for Zick. The Devils defense would do the rest killing off the remainder of the man-down by forcing a giveaway by Gavin Gossen. Two shots off the mark from Thurston would eventually lead to the Red and White going man-up where
Colin Williams took a cross crease feed from Isaacson and slammed the rock to the back of the net. That woke the Mustangs attack up as they recorded seven consecutive shots resulting in markers for Max Racich, Andrew Searing and Zick to draw the hosts level 5-5 through 30 minutes.
Stevenson opened up the third by taking their first lead of the game through Jered Monar just over a minute in. Dickinson tried to respond immediately, but Scorese had the answers for both Gannon and Thurston. However, the guests did find the equalizer thanks to Mulhern off the feed from
Mac Childs and then took the lead through another one by Mulhern. The would attempt to add-on thanks to a pair of man-up chances, but the offerings from
Liam Carney,
Griffin Moore, Childs and Isaacson all went wide. Fortunately, the persistence for DC paid off finally with 2:38 remaining when Schluter hit
Sam Campbell for the rocket and the 8-6 lead with three in the books.
The Mustangs claimed the first faceoff of the fourth, but a giveaway by Gossen led to a loose ball for Thurston resulting in a tally for Mulhern a few seconds later. Just over a minute later Schluter pushed it out to 10-6, before
Ben Trucksess claimed the ensuing draw and hauled it down the field beating Scorese for the 11-6 advantage with just under 13 minutes left. The Red and White continued to tack onto their lead with goals by
Owen Porter and Thurston (2) making it 14-6. Â
