CARLISLE, Pa. - After reaching the Centennial Conference postseason for the first-time since 2004 last season the Dickinson baseball team punctuated another berth in the tournament by sweeping the visiting Swarthmore College Garnet on Saturday afternoon at MacPhail Field. The Red and White needed ten innings to take game one 7-6, before posting an 11-0 rout in game two.
Game One (DEVILS 7, Garnet 6) (F/10)
Records: Swarthmore 18-18, 8-9 CC | Dickinson 25-10, 12-5 CC
Time of Game: 2:30
Pitching Decision: W -
Joey Sangiuolo (5-1) | L - Jack Bowling (2-2)
Inside the Game
Pitching was the name of the game early as
Koll Peichel and Noah Potholm kept things quiet through the first two innings. The Garnet would crack the board first during the top of the third as with two down a pair of singles and a walk resulted in one crossing the plate for a 1-0 lead. However, in the home-half Dickinson had an answer as a single for
Dylan Posencheg, double by
Kenny Tagliareni and walk to
Luke Gartland filled the bags with one away for
Ryan Thompson. During his at-bat a wild pitch led to Posencheg coming in to knot the score. Thompson would then be plunked by a pitch to reload the bags, but the next two hitters were retired. An inning later a double by
Johnny Bruno and single for
Josh Markley had men at the corners with no outs.
Christian Kim collected an RBI with a groundout, before Posencheg smashed a double down the line in left plating one more for a 3-1 edge going to the fifth. The Garnet would draw even in that frame thanks to two fielder's choices, a walk, single and hit batter. Swarthmore then took the lead for the second time in the game at 5-3 using three singles and a DC miscue during the sixth. Sanguiolo would give up one in the seventh after getting the final out in the sixth when with two away Benjamin Buchman singled, before Jett Shue plated him with a double extending the margin to 6-3. Dickinson came to bat in the last of the eighth with six outs to play with needing three runs against new pitcher Jack Fitzgerald. Walks to both
Matt Torres and Markley put two on with one down for Kim. After a wild pitch moved both men 90-feet, he produced an RBI groundout which was followed by an RBI triple off the stick of Posencheg cutting it down to 5-4. A walk and hit batter loaded the cushions and chased the pitcher from the game as Ethan Weiss entered the game. He immediately let the Devils tie the game by walking Thompson to force home Posencheg. Things stayed locked at 6-6 through the ninth and into the tenth when Dickinson went to work looking for the walk-off. A leadoff double for Tagliareni and error on Thompson's at-bat had men on the corners with one away.
Kaden Sigmon stepped into the box looking to end the game and that was exactly what he did with a single through the right-side driving home Tagliareni.
Devils Mound Report
Peichel was solid through 5.2 allowing eight hits and five runs to go along with six strikeouts and two walks. Sangiuolo earned the win in relief with 4.1 frames tossed giving up three hits and one run with three strikeouts.
Game Two (DEVILS 11, Garnet 0)
Records: Swarthmore 18-19, 8-10 CC | Dickinson 26-10, 13-5 CC
Time of Game: 1:59
Pitching Decision: W -
Austin Buzza (3-3) | L - Liam Alpern (2-5)
Inside the Game
The second game was all about the Devils as Torres opened up the last of the second with a double, before two batters later Sigmon smacked a two-bagger to left making it 1-0. The Red and White kept on attacking during the third when with one gone, walks to Tagliareni and
Luke Gartland along with Thompson being plunked filled the bags for Torres. He poked a single through the right-side scoring two, before two batters later Sigmon legged out an infield single stretching the lead to 4-0 through three. Buzza continued his strong outing on the hill by recording his first "three-up, three-down" inning of the game in the top of the fourth. That gave way to the Dickinson offense once again in the home-half where a single for Posencheg and a hit Tagliareni put two on and chased Alpern from the contest. The new arm was Jeremy Jensen and he watched an error committed by his centerfielder let Gartland reach to load the cushions. Thompson then roped a two-run single into right, followed by the second and third Swarthmore errors of the frame plating two more opening the advantage to 8-0. Sigmon made it 9-0 with a sac fly to right and Bruno whacked a double to left pushing the gap to ten entering the fifth. Another quiet trip to the plate for the Garnet gave DC the chance to make it 11-0 in the bottom-half when a single for Posencheg ultimately came into score on a sacrifice fly to left by Thompson. From there the relief duo of
Charlie Bien and
Brian Riley slammed the door shut on the visitors with each posting a scoreless as Charles Watson watched strike three go by to end the game.
Devils Mound Report
Buzza earned the win going the first five allowing just four hits and no runs or walks, while fanning four. Bien and Riley went one inning each giving up one hit apiece and combining for three strikeouts.
