CARLISLE, Pa. - The eighth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team put together a complete effort in all phases of the game on Saturday to close out the regular season with dominant 17-8 Centennial Conference victory over the visiting Ursinus College Bears.
The Red and White came out firing early and often against UC keeper Jonathan Singer as he turned aside
Skyler Schluter and
James Isaacson, but conceded goals to Schluter (
Matt Thurston assist) and
Sascha Gannon (Schluter assist) to make it 2-0 with 4:07 gone. Less than a minute later it became 3-0 as Aidan Kirk missed the cage leading to the visitors getting into the "10-man ride" which Dickinson took full advantage of as
Patrick Scarborough got the rock ahead to
Evan Karetsos who hit the vacant net from about 50-yards away. After the Bears got on the board for the first time thanks to Eddie Newman, Isaacson setup
Owen Porter for a 4-1 advantage. The defense continued to lock things up for the home side as Scarborough made a stop, while
Xander Usich and
Jack Deady each caused a turnover setting the stage for Gannon to rip the net. The Devils were not done though as Scarborough denied Christopher Pucciarelli leading to
Ethan Gess beating the buzzer making it 6-1 after one.Â
An early UC turnover gave DC the ability to open the margin to 7-1 just over a minute in when
Sam Campbell hit Gannon. After another stop by Scarborough this time on Lars Homan, the Devils went back down the field and watched Thurston bury the ball behind Singer making it 8-1. Then, just 23-seconds later on a man-up opportunity Schluter dished the rock to Thurston for his second marker in quick succession (9-1) with not even five minutes gone. The next three combined shots between the two sides resulted in three goals as the Bears picked up two, while
Griffin Moore cashed in for the Red and White leaving it at 10-3. Dickinson was not done on the offensive end as Porter scored with 11:01 gone. Over the last three minutes each keeper was tasked with making one more stop holding the margin at 11-3 going to the break.Â
The opening six minutes of the third quarter saw neither side find their footing offensively as the teams combined for seven turnovers and one save apiece by the goalies. It took until the 8:35 mark of the frame to see the first tally when Porter found Isaacson for the finish. Dickinson then took advantage of two more caused turnovers when Karetsos knocked the ball loose to
Capp Reynolds who setup Porter, before Deady stripped Chris Bryant leading to Porter tickling the twine unassisted for the 14-3 lead with 3:58 left. The Devils still were not done as Scarborough shutdown Newmam setting the stage for a
Luke Whalen strike, but Newman capped the scoring for the period at 15-4.
Dickinson needed five minutes of the fourth to extend the gap to 13 when Singer gave the ball away to Schluter who setup Gess, prior to Whalen finding Gannon for a 17-4 advantage. The keepers then took over during the next five minutes with Singer notching three more stops, while his counterpart Scarborough made two of his own. However, it would be the Bears who carried the rest of the play offensively ending the game on a four-goal run to set the 17-8 final.
