CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The sixth-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse outscored the host Washington College 4-0 over the final 15 minutes to escape with a 12-7 Centennial Conference win over the Shoremen at Kirby Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts had the opening two shots of the contest with Ben Hazlehurst firing wide, while Cam Carrigan being turned aside by
Patrick Scarborough. That would result in Dickinson having the opportunity to tally the game's first goal when
Skyler Schluter found
Charlie Baughan who beat Will Charvala. However, the home team answered right back not even a minute later through Grant Matthews. The game remained tied over the next six-plus minutes as Ben Dickinson,
Sascha Gannon, Reeve Hargrave, Ryan Poston, Baughan and Matthews all recording shots for their respective sides forcing a combined three saves between the goalies. The Red and White reclaimed the lead with 3:30 left when
Luke Whalen collected an unassisted marker. Washington posted four of the final six shots of the period, but did not force a stop out of Scarborough as the game entered the second at 2-1.Â
Each team would test the keeper less than two minutes into the period when Gabe Velasquez was denied by Scarborough and Whalen was shutdown by Charvala. The Shoremen did draw even though with 13:31 left as Luke Brennan cashed in, before both Schluter and Matthews each bagged a goal to keep the score locked at 3-3. Following a pair of off the mark chances for
Sam Campbell, the hosts took their first lead of the game through Tom Merritt. The Devils would then respond with a man-up marker from
Colin Williams, but Morgan setup Dickinson at the halfway point of the frame to regain a 5-4 lead for WAC. The visitors ended the half with a bang recorded ten consecutive shots resulting in three saves, one post as well as three goals by
Owen Porter, Carney and Childs to take a 7-5 edge into the break.
After Scarborough denied Dickinson 1:40 into the third, Gannon stretched the gap to 8-5 on the ensuing trip down the field. Just over a minute later though the Shoremen halted the DC run with Connor Garrison hitting the back of the net. The next four minutes saw the home team post four shots, but did not require any saves from the keeper. Dickinson tallied three of the next four chances with Gannon and Schluter tasking Charvala into making some saves, while Porter ripped one wide of cage keeping things at 8-6 into the final three minutes. Coming out of a Washington timeout, the Red and White would get opportunities from Baughan and Childs which went wide, but Dickinson struck once again for the hosts trimming it down to 8-7 going to the fourth.Â
The Devils were all over the attacking half of the field to start the fourth as
Griffin Moore, Carney and Porter were all kept off the board, while
Matt Thurston setup Schluter to make it 9-7 with five minutes off the clock. Dickinson continued to fire away at the WAC goal with Thurston and Williams asking questions of Charvala, before
Cullen Mulhern solved the goalie for the 10-7 lead at the 6:47 mark. The next three shots belonged to the Shoremen with new keeper
Rocco Bognet up to the task denying Brennan, Dickinson and Morgan. Off the denial of Brennan, the Red and White went back down the field and made it 11-7 as Schluter hit Gannon for the finish. The Devils then capped off the scoring with 3:38 remaining when Schluter buried the feed from Carney to set the 12-7 final.
