Timely Hitting and Strong Pitching Send Devils to Championship Game

BALTIMORE – For the third straight game in this Centennial Conference tournament run the Dickinson baseball team found themselves behind early. However, as have been the case all year with this Devils team they bounce back as solo runs in the third, fourth and fifth as well as an insurance marker in the eighth coupled with outstanding pitching by Austin Buzza and Joey Sangiuolo helped them to a 4-2 win over McDaniel College this afternoon at Babb Field.

Records: McDaniel – 23-15 | Dickinson – 28-11
Time of Game: 2:05
Pitching Decision: W – Austin Buzza (4-3) | L – Ryan Martino (5-1) | S – Joey Sangiuolo (6)

Inside the Game
For the second straight postseason matchup between the two programs, it would be McDaniel who picked up the first run as an error in the field behind DC starter Austin Buzza put a man on. After a stolen base and flyout pushed him to third Joey Hubinger provided an RBI groundout to short. The Green Terror would proceed to load the bags with a single hit batter and error before Todd Calhoun grounded out. McDaniel tried to make it 2-0 in the second, with two in scoring position and one down, but a popout and grounder retired the side. The pitching for both sides remained strong into the last of the third when back-to-back doubles by Dylan Posencheg and Kenny Tagliareni knotted things at 1-1. However, Tyson Nercessian setdown the trio of Luke Gartland, Ryan Thompson and Matt Torres to end the rally moving the game to the fourth. Buzza continued his dominance in the top-half of the frame by retiring the side "three-up, three-down". Then, in the last of the inning with one away Josh Markley jumped on a 1-0 pitch from new arm Ryan Martino and hammered it over the left-field wall to give the Devils a 2-1 edge with four in the books. Unfortunately for Dickinson, McDaniel would get that run right back as a double for Shane Daly was followed with an RBI single by Ethan Haddock. A fielder's choice had runners at first and second with just one out, but Buzza got Shea McKenna to bounce into a double-play. The Red and White had an answer of their own in the home-half when with the bases empty and two down Thompson walked and Torres smoked a two-bagger down the line in left to put two in scoring position for Sigmon. He reached on an error allowing Thompson to race home making it 3-2 entering the sixth.

McDaniel got a runner all the way to third base against reliever Joey Sangiuolo, but a pair of flyouts and a groundout prevented any damage. A one-out base hit for Haddock put the tying run on base before Hubinger struck out and Davis popped up to third sending the game to the stretch. Following a quiet, last of the seventh, Sangiuolo continued his fantastic outing by setting down Tyler Yohn, Calhoun and McKenna in order during the eighth. Dickinson would find a much-needed insurance in the last of the frame when with one down Johnny Bruno unloaded on a hanging breaking ball from James Cosgrove to take a 4-2 lead. Kim then worked a walk to chase Cosgrove from the game as Connor Henderson entered and plunked Tagliareni to put two on with two down for Gartland. He knocked a single out into left field, but Kim was thrown out trying to score from second moving the game to the ninth. Sangiuolo put away the first two men he faced and then allowed a single to Daly, before getting Haddock to bounce out to Torres at second ending the game.

Devils Mound Report
Buzza claimed the win with five strong innings allowing just four hits and two runs (one earned) to go along with two strikeouts and no walks. Sangiuolo was excellent in relief going the remaining four frames scattering three hits and no runs as well as notching two strikeouts.

The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (28-11) will now have the tall task of needing to knockoff top-seeded Johns Hopkins twice. That task begins tonight at 6:30pm.
