GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team began their 2024 season on Friday with a split in their opening two matches at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College. First, the Red and White knocked off Southern Virginia University in a classic five-setter, before falling in four to Gallaudet University inside of Bream Gymnasium.
Match One - DEVILS,3, Knights 2 (25-17, 25-17, 25-27, 22-25, 15-13)
- SVU began strong with an ace by Jessica Stone making it 4-2, but then points from Alexa Barowski and Amelia Kim helped give DC seven of the next eight for a 9-5 edge.
- A 6-2 run for the Knights knotted the score at 11, before kills from Jessica Currie, Mallie Thomas, Barowski and Kim staked the Devils to the 21-15Â lead.
- Dickinson ended the set with a 4-1 push thanks to an ace for Camille Dofiles and a combined block for Lillian Bigsby and Thomas to take it 25-17.
- The Devils were dominant early with aces for Avery Butcher and Thomas coupled with kills by Barowski, Currie and Kim making it 13-3.
- After SVU grabbed five of the next six, Cassidy Davis, Bigsby, Dofiles and Thomas extended the DC advantage to 20-10.
- Sydney Bassett and Ruby Blamires tried to keep the Knights within striking distance, but the group of Barowski, Currie, Dofiles and Kim would close things out at 25-17.
- Dickinson was off and running early in the set with Bigsby, Butcher, Currie, Dofiles, Kim and Thomas making it 13-3.
- However, Summer Hahn, Brookelyn Madland and Stone led the Knights on a 14-5 outburst to pull within 18-17.
- Kathryn Arcara, Butcher, Kim and Thomas tried to help Dickinson distance themselves, but it was not to be as the two sides traded points all the way to 25-25. However, two straight DC errors brought SVU back into the match with a 27-25 win.
- The two sides traded points to begin the frame with Bigsby, Currie, Davis, Dofiles, Kim and Thomas providing the offense for DC leaving the score at 12-12.
- Three aces for Butcher along with kills from Barowski, Bigsby, Currie, Davis and Thomas kept things locked up 22-22.
- Unfortunately, the Knights nabbed the next three points to force a decisive fifth with a 25-22 triumph.
- Scores by Currie, Dofiles, Kim and Thomas had Dickinson clinging to a slim 6-5 lead.
- After two straight from SVU made it 7-6, five Knight errors and a Thomas kill gave DC a 12-8 edge.
- Following a 5-1 run for SVU, back-to-back attacking errors from the Knights handed the Devils the match (15-13).

Match Two - Bison 3, DEVILS 1 (18-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-18)
- It was the Bison that got off to the quick start as two kills from Currie left DC trailing 11-5.
- The Red and White fought back hard though with Grace Coccagna, Bigsby, Davis, Kim and Thomas pulling the Devils to within 16-14.
- After that it was all Dickinson as Barowski, Coccagna, Davis and Thomas closed out the set on an impressive 11-2 romp for the 25-18 victory.Â
- For the second consecutive set Gallaudet began strong with Ashlene Etkie, Citrine Lummer, Anya Pothorski and Brielle Worley giving the Bison a 15-9 advantage.
- The trio of Coccagna, Davis and Thomas then answered back with four in a row to make it 15-13.
- Unfortunately, for the Devils it was all Bison from there ending on a 10-0 run with Worley providing the final kill (25-13).
- Things were on the seesaw early with Barowski, Bigsby, Kim and Thomas providing offense for Dickinson who trailed 9-8.
- Ella Gamble and Worley then started a 9-4 spurt to take a six-point lead at 18-12.
- As they had all night the Devils would mount a rally as Barowski, Kim and Thomas cut the deficit down to 24-20. However, Cassidy Perry put down the final kill of the frame for the 25-20 win.
- Two kills from Thomas and a GU miscue gave the Devils a 3-2 edge, but then the Bison grabbed eight of the next ten to jump ahead 9-6.
- Scores from Barowski and Kim made it 9-8, before Gallaudet ripped off eight in a row for the 17-8 advantage.
- Bigsby, Currie, Kim, Palmer and Thomas gave Dickinson a spark closing the gap to 23-17.
- A pair of kills by Jada Zarembka wrapped up the match for the Bison at 25-18.

- Dickinson (1-1) returns to Gettysburg College tomorrow afternoon for day two of the Battlefield Classic. The Red and White will first face Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 1pm, before squaring off with Eastern University at 3pm.
