Devils Split First DH Since Returning From South Carolina

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team finally returned to action on Friday afternoon for the first time since their very busy spring break trip in South Carolina by making a short drive down to Wilson College to battle the Phoenix in non-conference action. The Red and White were not able to dig out of an early hole in game one falling by a score of 7-5, before using four multi-hit performances in the second contest to claim a 7-6 win.

Final Score - Phoenix 7, DEVILS 5
Records - DEVILS 7-6 | Wilson - 8-5
Pitching Decision - W - Julia Wilkes (3-0) | L - Abby Kohan (3-3)

Inside the Game
  • The home side used the bottom of the first to immediately claim the lead using four straight one-out hits to take a 2-0 lead, before with runners on the corners and two away Carleigh Magers collected an RBI single to right-center for a 3-0 lead heading to the second.
  • With two down and one on second, Hope Josti roped a single to center driving in Marah Goldman who reached earlier on a fielder's choice. Lily Hartley was safe on the second fielder's choice of the frame and Grace Dibuono-Krafick filled the pillows for the Devils. However, a popout would end the threat at 3-1.
  • The Red and White drew level in the ensuing inning as a single for Jane Lloyd, followed by back-to-back errors allowing Eden Blanker and Kaylie Renner to reach as well as letting Lloyd cross home. Then a groundout off the stick of Goldman made it 3-3, but a popout and strikeout closed out the top-half of the inning.
  • Wilson would respond in a big way during the home-half as a walk and error put to on for Jenna Weaver who plated one with a single. Magers then followed with a two-run double down the left-field line. Two hitters later Sydney Barker singled up the box pushing the lead to 7-3 as Magers cruised home to close out the third.
  • The next two frames went by scoreless, before Dickinson would chip one off the deficit in the front-half of the sixth. A one-out walk to Jessie Sandusky led to an RBI double from Blanker cutting it to 7-4 as the game went to the seventh.
  • Dickinson attempted to start some last call heroics with one away in the top of the seventh as a single to center by Lauren Routzahn gave DC a much needed base runner. After consecutive wild pitches moved her to third, the fifth error of the game against Wilson with Hartley at-bat resulted in Routzahn crossing home. Unfortunately for the Devils, Wilkes induced a game-ending infield pop-up to close things out.
  • Hits - Routzahn (2)
  • RBIs - Blanker, Goldman and Josti (1)
  • Runs Scored - Five players tied (1)
  • Doubles - Blanker (1)

Inside the Game
  • With one down in the top of the first, Lloyd would work a free pass to set the stage for Blanker to rip a double into center for an early 1-0 lead.
  • Wilson used the home-half of the same inning to take their first lead of the game. With two on and one gone, Kayla Talbert smacked a two-run double to left, before a base knock by Deanna Estes put Talbert across home for a 3-1 edge heading to the second.
  • After a quiet second for both sides, the Red and White came up to bat in the third. With one out back-to-back hits for Sandusky and Lloyd had two on for Blanker. She would continue her strong day with a bases clearing single up the box to tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later Routzahn reclaimed the lead for the Devils with a base knock making it 4-3, but the rally then stalled out thanks to a strikeout.
  • However, a double and two singles during the bottom-half of the third allowed the Phoenix to rise up to take the 5-4 lead and chase DC starter Emory Hadden from the game and force Kohan to go back into the circle. She would induce a ground ball out of Barker to end the frame.
  • Dickinson answered right back in the ensuing frame as with two out singles for Hadden and Sandusky gave way to a two-run rip to right for Lloyd to give the Devils a 6-5 advantage with four in the books.
  • Once again the home side just would not go away using a trio of singles in the last of the fifth from Talbert, Briggs and Moffett to scratch another run across leveling the game back up at 6-6 through five.
  • In the sixth, it was a duo of first-years that put the pressure on the Phoenix as a double to left for Elizabeth Raefski and infield knock by Hadden had two on with no one out. After Emma Varella grounded out, Sandusky provided what would eventually be the game winner with a sacrifice fly to left.
  • Kohan shut things down from there setting down the Wilson hitters "six-up, six-down" to end the game and earn the split.
  • Hits - Blanker, Hadden, Lloyd and Sandusky (2)
  • RBIs - Blanker (3), Lloyd (2), Routzahn and Sandusky (1)
  • Runs Scored - Lloyd and Sandusky (2)
  • Doubles - Blanker, Lloyd and Raefski (1)
  • Hadden - 2.2 ip, 8 hits, 5 runs (earned), 1 walk, 0 strikeouts
  • Kohan - 4.1 ip, 3 hits, 1 run (earned), 0 walks, 2 strikeouts
  • Dickinson (8-6) finally returns home on Sunday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against Alvernia University beginning at 1pm.
