CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team battled hard all afternoon at Saturday as they welcomed the fourth-ranked Franklin and Marshall College to Biddle Field for a Centennial Conference showdown. Despite getting hat tricks from both
Bella Guckes and
Delaney Herbert as well as outscoring the visitors 4-1 over the final 15 minutes it was the Diplomats escaping Carlisle with a slim 10-9 win.
- The home side opened the game up fast as Herbert setup Sage Whiteside for a finish past Sara DiGiovanni just 22-seconds in.
- Dickinson tallied two of the next three shots thanks to Caroline Cavendish and Herbert, but neither was able to beat DiGiovanni.
- That allowed the Diplomats to level the score at the 9:17 mark when Lydia Cassilly beat Peyton VanDorpe.
- Following a save from DiGiovanni against Whiteside, Belle Dintino got a pass up to Lauren Pittman who was able to make it 2-1 at the end of one.
- To open the period Sierra McLaughlin took over between the pipes for the Devils and was immediately called into action by Cassilly.
- On the ensuing Dickinson possession, Herbert notched her first of the day off a slick feed from Jenna Nowland. However, after Lane Lambeth claimed the draw Cassilly capped off a nice pass by Pittman to make it 3-2 just over a minute in.
- After back-to-back chances for Guckes missed the target, both keepers were tasked with making a save denying Julia Carbon and Herbert respectively.
- The Diplomats then found a second gear offensively recording the next five shots with three of them finding the net to grab a 6-2 edge with 1:26 left.
- Dickinson, however, did find some much needed momentum going into the break as a late foul on Sophia Geibel allowed Herbert to cash in on a free position opportunity in the final minute (6-3).
- Starting the third frame, VanDorpe returned to cage for the Red and White and watched Faith Parker hack one off the deficit only 51-seconds in.
- Once again though, F&M had the response when Claire Book struck unassisted not even a minute later.
- VanDorpe then found herself under major pressure making three more saves, but also being solved by Adde Hollander and Lambeth opening the gap to 9-4 with 8:08 gone.
- About five minutes later Ali Broome popped the ball free from Cassilly allowing VanDorpe to get the ball ahead to Herbert who connected with Guckes who made it 9-5 entering the fourth.
- Two minutes into the period a stop from VanDorpe on Pittman led to the Devils cutting the deficit to 9-6 thanks to Grace Kelly finding Herbert.
- After VanDorpe shutdown Pittman again and DiGiovanni had the answer for Carson Cerow, Marnie Todd linked up with Guckes for the tally (9-7).
- F&M put a halt to the DC charge when Alexandra Proefrock scored from a free position chance opening the lead out to three (10-7) at the 8:59 mark.
- Another save by VanDorpe against Lambeth set the stage for Kelly to put the rock in the stick of Guckes who fired a shot beyond the reach of DiGiovanni.
- Dickinson continued to battle as hard as they could when with 20-seconds remaining a foul on Izzy Deubner allowed Cerow to bury a free-position shot sending the crowd into a frenzy at 10-9.
- Despite the Red and White claiming the ensuing draw control they were unable to get a shot off allowing the Diplomats to finish off the win.
