Devils Collect Pivotal Conference Sweep Over Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team got multiple hits from seven different players in game one on Sunday afternoon to out-slug the host Ursinus College 18-16, before using a solid pitching effort from the duo of Grayson Walker and Charlie Bien to nab a more conventional 7-3 victory in game two over the Bears at Thomas Field.

Records - DEVILS 12-14, 1-6 CC | Ursinus 17-11, 4-4 CC
Pitching Decision - W - Drew Norton (2-2) | L - Barritt Ross (0-1)

Inside the Game
  • The Devils got right to Dan Bass as singles from Ryan Thompson and Josh Markley set the stage for Matt Torres two batters later to come up with a two-run double. Bass then collected himself to get the next two hitters. Ursinus got one back during the bottom-half off of Austin Buzza as a leadoff single from Brandon Sullivan came around to score two men after on a groundout for Andrew Richter.
  • After a scoreless top of the second, the Bears picked up four during the last of the second. A single, error and hit batter gave George Nestor the ability to clear the bags with a three-run single into right. Sullivan followed two hitters after that with an RBI single up the middle making it 5-2 through two.
  • It would stay that way until the last of the fourth as Ursinus used four singles, two DC miscues and a double to rack up five runs extending their advantage out to 10-2 as the game rolled into the fifth.
  • That was when Dickinson would get back on the board when with one away a single for Kevin Schmidt, double by Torres and a hit batter of Kaden Sigmon led to Luke Gartland poking a pitch through the left-side to score one. Kyle Bailey then picked up two RBIs with a single up the box, before Shawn Arneja doubled inside the right-field line driving in one. A sacrifice fly from Will Ferris and base hit by Thompson helped DC finish off a six-run frame to get within 10-8.
  • Unfortunately, new pitcher Dylan Robinson was not able to post a clean inning as two hit batters and a walk set the stage for a two-run single by Richter along with an RBI know for Peter Balos making it 13-8 after five. They would add one more in the sixth thanks to a single and a triple (14-8).
  • Dickinson did not go away though as walks to Arneja and Thompson as well as a single by Gartland loaded the bags with two away for Josh Markley. He would be hit by a pitch to score one, before Schmidt smashed a two-run single to center. Sigmon would then bring the Red and White to within one at 14-13 heading to the last of the seventh with a two-run knock to right.
  • Glen Cantalupo Jr. became the third arm of the game for the Devils, but he could not keep a clean frame as two hit batters, two free passes and a fielder's choice let the Bears pick up two more to extend their edge to 16-13 going into the eighth.
  • David Morgan went to the slab for UC and after getting two quick outs an error and a two-bagger from Thompson plated one. That was followed by RBI hits for Markley and Schmidt to draw DC level (16-16).
  • The game stayed that way until the top of the ninth when Ross entered the game. A single by Sigmon and free pass to Gartland had two on with no outs. Dylan Posencheg then stepped into the box and tried to lay down a bunt to move the runners. However, he did one better he got the bunt down and because of an error by the third baseman let one cross. Arneja then provided a sacrifice fly to make it 18-16 with the Bears facing last call.
  • Norton completed a strong relief performance by setting the hosts down in order to end the game.

Inside the Game
  • Dickinson loaded the bags in the top of the first as Markley walked, Schmidt doubled and Torres was hit by a pitch with just one out. However, starter Kieran Hollander recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the rally, The last of the first saw the Bears get on the board against Walker thanks to a pair of singles.
  • After Posencheg reached on a fielder's choice, he would take second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch allowing Arneja to come up with an RBI groundout to tie the game. Thompson then drew a walk, before Markley gave the Red and White the lead with a single up the box to take a 2-1 edge to the last of the second. However, a single and double in the bottom-half brought the home side back to level at 2-2 entering the third.
  • The next two frames went by without any scoring as things stayed 2-2 into the fifth. With one away Torres walked and Sigmon ripped a two-bagger into right-center putting two in scoring position for Gartland. He gave the Devils the lead back with an RBI groundout to short. Bailey would then groundout to shortstop to halt things.
  • Walker returned to the hill and posted a "one-two-three" last of the fifth, before allowing a two-out double in the sixth but not letting the runner come home.
  • An error and two groundouts gave DC a man at third with two gone for Sigmon. He would walk and Gartland was plunked by a pitch to load the cushions for Bailey. That was when the visitors bumped their edge to 5-2 with a two-run knock through the right-side of the infield. The Red and White added two more during the eighth when with one gone Thompson singled and Markley was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch with Schmidt in the box allowed him to extend the lead to 7-2 thanks to a two-run base hit to right.
  • Bien took over for Walker in the bottom of the eighth and would allow one to score courtesy of a walk and two singles. However, 7-3 was as close as the Bears could get as Bien retired three of four men he faced during the ninth to end the game.
