ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -Â Coming off a heartbreaking overtime conference loss to ninth-ranked Gettysburg College the 17th-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team was determined to get back on the winning track on Saturday afternoon as they made the long trek down to St. Mary's College of Maryland for the non-conference finale. Fortunately, for the Red and White a six-goal run over the third quarter broke open a 6-5 game into 12-5 lead after three en route to a 14-11 triumph at JLR Stadium.
- Dickinson would take advantage of a pair of turnovers forced by Joey Wood and Ethan Ferrant to strike first with Ethan Gess finding Blake Resnick for a man-up tally past Ty Grove.
- Keegan Preis made it 1-1, but then following one save each by Devils keeper Rocco Bognet and Grove, the Seahawks took the lead with Declan Horton scoring at the 8:49 mark.
- Another Bognet stop led to DC's second of the matchup as Charlie Baughan linked up with Landen Hyatt for the finish with 4:27 left.Â
- After Ben Trucksess won the ensuing draw offerings from Tommy Baldini, Gess and Trucksess missed the mark, while SMC notched the remaining six shots forcing one stop from Bognet.
- Ramsey Huggins used the opening minute to do it all for the Red and White as he caused a turnover, picked up the groundball and then solved Grove at the other end for the 3-2 edge.
- The teams traded the next four shots with none of them bothering the goalies.Â
- Then, following a giveaway by Aiden Doyle forced by Jack Deady, Will Single found the free ball and got it up to Huggins who hit Hyatt for his second (4-2) with 9:02 to go.
- Both keepers then got involved with Bognet shutting down Matteo Ciccarello and Doyle, while Grove told Luke Whalen and Baughan "no" to keep it at 4-2 inside the final four minutes.
- That was when the goals came quick with Doyle striking twice to knot the score, before Whalen answered with two of his own to give the Devils a 6-4 edge going to the third.
- St. Mary's opened the period with a bang as Horton buried a dish from Nate Hochrein only 32 seconds in.
- However, over the next five-plus minutes it was all Devils with them recording 11 consecutive shots allowing Grove to make three saves, but at the same time forced him to give up four goals to the group of Whalen (Gess assist), Matt Thurston (Baughan assist), Hyatt (Trucksess assist) and Whalen making it 10-5 with 9:14 left.
- Following three straight shots by Doyle that didn't bother Bognet, each goalie was called upon with Grove beating away a shot from Luke Devlin, while Boget stopped Nick Machiran.Â
- Dickinson would fire the remaining nine shots of the quarter as Grove made two more saves, but Hyatt (Huggins assist) and Huggins (Sam Bunten assist) each tickled the twine to extend the margin to 12-5 through 45 minutes.
- The Devils continued to have the Seahawks on their heels early as Whalen hit the post and Ferrant attempted a "pole goal" which just missed the mark.
- However, Dickinson was not to be denied with Huggins cashing in on a dish from Thurston at the 2:23 mark to take a 13-5 lead.
- A Hochrein marker off the ensuing faceoff kicked off a dominant stretch for the home side as the Red and White were held without a shot and essentially a possession over the next seven minutes as the home side scored six straight and won five faceoffs to cut the deficit down to just two (13-11) still with 5:36 to play.
- After Bognet shutdown Preis to keep the margin at two Owen Porter rippled the net past Grove to set the 14-11 final.
