ASHLAND, Va. - The Dickinson football outscored the host and 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College 20-7 over the final quarter, but were unable to make it completely out of a 28-7 halftime hole to allow the home side to escape Day Field with a 48-34 non-conference win.
First Quarter
- Both teams saw their opening drive of the season end with a turnover as Chris Barnes picked off Dante Casciola, while Christian Daniel intercepted a pass from Ben Klassen.
- The remainder of the period saw neither team get on track offensively as they could not cross onto the plus side of the midfield stripe and the quarter came to a close with no score.
Second Quarter
- Coming out to start the frame RMC had the ball resting at the DC11. Three runs advanced the drive to the DC1, but put the Yellow Jackets at fourth-and-one. That was when the defense stood tall as Joaquin Acuna stuffed Mitchell Johnson.
- Unfortunately, for the Red and White their ensuing drive ended on a fumble inside their own ten. That set up the home team to find the first points of the game as two plays later Basit Qadri took it from seven yards for a 7-0 lead (Tyler Graham kick).
- The RMC lead swelled to 14-0 two plays into the Devils possession as Klassen had his pass intercepted and taken all the way back to the endzone by Brandon Watson (Tyler Graham kick).
- Klassen would connect with both Kellen Boyer and Leon Friebel to advance down to the RMC24. Facing second-and-six Klassen found Frederik Fjeldseth for a 24-yard TD for the Devils first points of the season (Justin Worobel kick).
- Gracyn Ross returned the Eliott Nahon kick down to the DC27 to begin the next RMC drive. The Jackets extended the gap to 21-7 thanks to four straight Johnson runs (Tyler Graham kick). After DC was stopped it became 28-7 with Johnson plunging in from a yard out (Tyler Graham kick).
- A 38-yard return on the kickoff for Keesean Campbell gave the Red and White a chance to get some points before the break. A 15-yard personal foul and 21-yard strike to Boyer had the Devils knocking on the door facing first-and-ten on the RMC10. However, DC was kept off the board as a fumble on the goal line stalled the drive and ended the half.
Third Quarter
- Â With 12:07 left the Jackets began a drive on their own 35 and used a combination of run and pass to ultimately end up with more points as Casciola connected with Qadri from 24-yards out for the 34-7 edge (Tyler Graham kick no good).
- Dickinson needed one play to trim seven points off the deficit when Campbell sprinted up the middle of the RMC defense and took it 65-yards to the house (Justin Worobel kick).
- The scoring continued on the ensuing home possession as they embarked on a nine-play, 82-yard drive that took just over six minutes leading to Casciola finding Jason Moore from 26 out to extend the margin to 41-14 (Trevor Luther kick).
Fourth Quarter
- The Red and White aired it out on the opening drive of the frame as Klassen hooked up with Moritz Mittendorfer for gains of 12 and 46 on back to back plays to push all the way down to the RMC21. That was when Klassen ended the drive with a flourish by finding Friebel for the 21-yard score (Justin Worobel kick no good).
- RMC'S following possession ended after just two plays as Casciola hit Moore for an eight-yard gain out to the RMC25, but Noah Bisrat was able to knock the ball free and recover it to give it right back to DC in great position.
- Following a seven-yard carry for Cedric Benning III, Klassen hit Mittendorfer for an eight-yard strike before finding Fjeldseth in the endzone from ten out making it 41-27 with 10:50 left (Justin Worobel kick).
- Rushes of 11, 12 and 30 brought RMC down to the DC12. The trio of Cameron Chatmon, Johnson and Casciola continued the run-only drive with the QB scampering home from seven away (Trevor Luther kick).
- Dickinson then scored using the opposite approach as Klassen hit three different receivers to get across midfield. That was when he found Boyer down the left sideline for a 39-yard touchdown to set the final score of 48-34 (Justin Worobel kick).
