No. 4 Blue Jays Use Bench Depth to Overpower Devils in CC Action

BALTIMORE - Senior two-way player Victoria Zerbe notched her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and season-high 14 rebounds, but it was not enough on the night as the fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University forced 22 Dickinson turnovers and outscored the Red and White 30-6 off the bench to stay unbeaten with a 60-40 Centennial Conference win at Goldfarb Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

First Quarter
  • Hopkins used the opening two minutes to jump out to a 4-0 lead on a pair of layups for Jocelyn Goldstein off of feeds from Macie Feldman.
  • Dickinson came out cold missing their opening eight shots, before Addison Cadwell rebounded a Goldstein miss and kicked the ball up to Victoria Zerbe for a layup with 4:34 gone. That sparked a 7-0 DC push with Mia Chapman scoring inside and Cadwell splashing home a triple to make it 7-4 with just over three minutes left.
  • The Blue Jays closed the period with the next five points on buckets by Layla Henderson and Faith Williamson giving the hosts a 9-7 edge at the end of one.
Second Quarter
  • The two sides would trade the first eight points of the frame with Clare Cronley and Chapman leaving the gap at 13-11, before Cronley collected an off-target shot by Lauren Knudson and got it ahead to Lizzie McGrath who laid it in for the tie 13-13.
  • Things continued to rock back-and-forth as Kendall Dunham and Zerbe exchanged baskets to keep it locked up (17-17) with half of the period to play.
  • Dickinson continued to stay close by with the duo of Cadwell and McGrath picking up jumpers making it 21-21, but a layup from Emily Collins moved the hosts back in front 23-21 with just a little more than two minutes left.
  • Henderson added another bucket for JHU late in the period to give the home side a 25-21 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter
  • Hopkins used the first minute-plus to add onto their lead on buckets for Feldman and Knudson making it 28-21.
  • Dickinson then scored six of the ensuing eight points thanks to tallies from Emma Landes, Chapman and Zerbe to pull within 30-27 at the 3:25 mark.
  • Following a couple of empty trips down the floor for the Red and White, a jumper knocked down by Dunham started a 7-2 flight for the Jays to end the frame giving them a 37-29 lead heading to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
  • Goldstein and Knudson collected four straight points to start things off pushing the margin to 41-29, before a pull-up jumper by Zerbe gave the Devils their first points with a minute gone.
  • Unfortunately for the visitors, Hopkins then embarked on a 9-2 outburst with contributions coming from Graces Soltes, Collins and Dunham while Cronley notched the only DC bucket leaving it at 50-33 with less than five minutes to play.
  • Jelena Subasic, Cadwell, Chapman and Cronley picked up baskets for DC down the stretch, but it was not enough as the Blue Jays finished off the 60-40 win.
