Devils Win Seventh Straight Against Mules

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team got a combined 31 points, ten rebounds and eight steals from the dynamic duo of senior Victoria Zerbe and sophomore Lizzie McGrath to help the Red and White hold off a strong push from the visiting Muhlenberg College to collect a 62-57 conference win inside the Kline Center on Wednesday evening. The win for the Devils marked the seventh consecutive victory for the team from Carlisle in the series as DC has not been tripped up by the Mules since a 66-59 setback on February 2nd, 2022 in Allentown.

First Quarter
  • DIckinson opened the game by scoring six of the first eight points on buckets from McGrath and Zerbe.
  • Linzy Roberson then ripped off four in a row to tie the game at 6-6, before a Zerbe layup and foul shot for Addison Cadwell made it 9-6 with 66 seconds left.
  • A triple by Katie McGrath and free throw hit by Roberson gave the guests a slim 10-9 edge. However, just Cadwell would be fouled beyond the arch with less than ten seconds left resulting in three foul shots and a 12-10 DC lead through one.
Second Quarter
  • A Clare Cronley three was the only Devil basket over the opening two-plus minutes as the visitors claimed six of the first nine points to jump ahead 16-15.
  • Zerbe collected another bucket in the paint, while the duo of Leah Dubin and Cronley stuck free throws to make it 20-17 four minutes in.
  • Three shots at the charity line by Roberson knotted the contest at 20-20, before jumpers from Cadwell and Zerbe gave the hosts a four-point cushion (24-20) with 3:47 to go.
  • However, Dickinson was unable to build on that edge as things seesawed over the rest of the period with the pair of Gabby Smelcer and Zerbe picking up points for DC, but leaving the game in a deadlock at 28.
Third Quarter
  • McGrath kicked off the frame with a trey, while two each from Mia Chapman and Zerbe had the Red and White in front 35-32 with two minutes gone.
  • After Avery McNulty cleaned up a miss from Veronica Dawson, another McGrath three-ball coupled with a layup by Emma Landes made it 40-34 just a few moments later.
  • Unfortunately, for Dickinson that would be their final points of the period as the Mules closed on a 10-0 outburst with a layup for McGrath giving MC a 44-40 advantage heading to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
  • Just 23-seconds in a layup for Dawson extended the margin to 46-40, but points for Chapman as well as another McGrath trey leveled the score at 48-48 with 5:55 to play.
  • Just over a minute later Zerbe connected with Cronley for a three, before a bad pass from McNulty set the stage for Cronley to hook up with McGrath for a shot from long-range and a 54-48 advantage.
  • A foul shot by McGrath slowed the DC charge for a second, but two points each from Cadwell, Chapman and Zerbe gave the Devils their largest lead of the day at 60-49 with 25-seconds remaining.
  • The Mules would outscore the home side 5-1 over the rest of the game, however it was not enough as the Devils finished off the 62-57 win.
