Devils Sweep Away River Hawks During Marathon Day at MacPhail

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team expected to spend the vast majority of their Saturday at MacPhail Field, but what the Red and White did not anticipate was that they would not be able to get the full expected two nine-inning games in. In game one the Devils would outlast the visiting Susquehanna University 16-15 in four hours and nine minutes, before needing just under two-and-a-half hours to post a 12-4 win in game two over just seven innings as the action was called due to darkness.

Game One
Final Score - DEVILS 16, River Hawks 15
Team Records - Dickinson (11-5) | Susquehanna (10-6)
Pitching Decision - W - Glen Cantalupo Jr. (1-0) | L - Max Lipton (1-1) | S - Charlie Bien (1)
Inside the Game
  • The scoring started right away as SU used a double and single to grab a 1-0 lead off of Sam Bliss. Then, in the home-half of the first with two away, three consecutive singles for Kevin Schmidt, Johnny Bruno and Kyle Bailey against Josh Domaracki left things at 1-1 entering the second.
  • With one gone in the top of the second, a base hit from Jaden Buechler and an error set the stage for Lincoln Hower to provide an RBI groundout for the 2-1 edge. However, last of the inning saw Ethan Sodl be hit by a pitch, Freeman Hunt single and Miguel Reich walk to load the bags with no one out. After a strikeout of Luke Gartland, Dylan Posencheg drove home one with a single, before Schmidt plated two making it 4-2 through two.
  • Susquehanna used three hits to immediately tie things at 4-4 heading to the last of the third. After Dickinson was kept scoreless in the bottom-half, a leadoff walk to Michael Girardi brought Ben Myers into the contest. He allowed the Hawks to reclaim the lead 6-4 thanks to a single two groundouts and a passed ball. Reich singled, Posencheg reached on an error and Schmidt was plunked to load the bags. Another error for the visitors let one runner score, but Bailey then grounded into an inning-ending double play.
  • Over the next inning and a half five hits led to SU plating five more with Hower collecting three RBIs, while CJ Orrego added the others making the score 11-5 going to the last of the sixth. Singles from Reich and Posencheg chopped one off the margin. A free pass to Schmidt and a base hit from Bruno once again filled the pillows with Devils. Dickinson then picked up four more runs without putting a ball in play as Josh Markley was hit, Sodl walked, Hunt was drilled and a wild pitch resulted in DC pulling within 11-10 entering the seventh.
  • Susquehanna was finally kept off the scoreboard by Zander Leckszas who allowed a single, but then recorded a double play and popout. Unfortunately, Dickinson stranded the tying run at third with their chance.
  • With the bags full and one out Hower was hit by a pitch to plate one. Michael Niszczak came in from the pen and hit his first man, prior to walking the next making it 14-10. Glen Cantalupo Jr. became the third arm of the frame and allowed a sac fly to push the lead to 15-10. Again though the Red and White showed their grit as two walks, wild pitch and passed ball scored one. Free passes drawn by Reich, Gartland and Posencheg drove home another. A sac fly off the bat of Schmidt trimmed it to 15-13, before Bruno smashed a two-bagger down into the left field tying the game. Bailey then ripped a single to left pushing DC ahead 16-15 as the Hawks faced "last call".
  • Charlie Bien came on trying to lockdown a wild game. He would allow a couple of base runners, but no one could cross as Girardi popped up to short for the final out.

Game Two
Final Score - DEVILS 12, River Hawks 4 (F/7)
Team Records - Dickinson (12-5) | Susquehanna (10-7)
Pitching Decision - W -  Austin Buzza (4-0) | L - Dane Rue (0-1)
Inside the Game
  • After Buzza set aside the Hawks in the top of the first, Dickinson went to work against Rue and used walks to Posencheg and Schmidt coupled with a single for Markley to load the bags with two down. Bailey then made it 2-0 with a knock to left, but a double play off the bat of Gartland allowed no one else to cross.
  • The River Hawks packed the cushions with two away in the third. However, Buzza got Andrew Haussman to watch strike three to stall the threat. The home-half saw Posencheg walk, Schmidt hit by pitch and Bruno walk to set the stage for Bailey to produce a sacrifice fly to center scoring one.
  • Dickinson then made it 4-0 two batters into the fourth when Reich deposited a Rue pitch off the scoreboard over the left field wall. Markley followed with a double, Posencheg was safe on an error and Matt Conforti worked a walk filling the sacks for Bruno. He extended the margin to 6-0 with a two-run single to left, while Bailey came up with a sac fly making it 7-0 after four.
  • An error, double along with a single helped the Hawks to pick up their first two of the game (7-2). Hunt collected an RBI during the last of the fifth plating Ben Milligan who had reached on a single to center. Hunt crossed home later in the frame when Posencheg ripped one through the left side (9-2).
  • Jason Stiles went to the mound to kickoff the home portion of the sixth and allowed two of the first three men to reach, before Milligan drove in one on a sac fly. The next man in the box was Hunt and plated the second of the inning with a base hit to center making it 11-2 rolling into the seventh.
  • Drew Norton took over for Buzza and conceded two runs on two hits to cut the deficit down to 11-4. However, Will Ferris opened the home-half with a single. He would then swipe second and head to third on the throw and ultimately score on a wild pitch with Posencheg in the box. A batter later Conforti worked a walk putting two on for the Devils. Unfortunately, that was when the umpire crew deemed it was no longer safe to continue allowing the Red and White to claim the 12-4 victory.
