CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The 11th-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team had their six-game win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 10-9 triple overtime loss to Washington College in the Centennial Conference opener for both sides. The Red and White by all the stats had command of the game outshooting the home side 54-18 (23-14 on goal), holding a 23-13 edge in turnovers, 44-26 in ground balls and a 17-8 advantage in faceoff wins. Unfortunately, it was the Shoremen's stingy defense that would allow Peyton Gestole to ultimately find the net in the third period of overtime.
First Quarter
- Things could not have started better for DC as Ryan Backus won the opening faceoff resulting in Charlie Baughan finding Laden Hyatt for the strike past Keegan Dunn just 63 seconds in.
- Mac Childs tried to add another just a minute later, but Dunn had the answer.Â
- It would then be Dickinson who put on a defensive clinic with Ethan Ackerman, Sam Bunten, Jack Deady and Will McDonald each causing a turnover, while Rocco Bognet shutdown Gestole.Â
- That gave DC the ability to make it 2-0 when Baughan connected with Ramsey Huggins.
- Dickinson outshot the Shoremen seven to one over the final three minutes as Tommy Baldini, Preston Boyd, Will Single and Huggins recording chances for DC. However, it would be WAC that found the net with their only shot with Tuck LeVanis striking (2-1).
Second Quarter
- Washington tallied twice within the opening five-plus minutes thanks to Jake Laubach (2) and Gestole giving the home side a 4-2 edge leading to a Devils timeout.
- Coming out of the break Huggins missed the target with his shot, while at the other end Aiden Ventura sent one past Bognet extending the advantage to 5-2 with 6:41 left.
- Drew Stark, Boyd and Hyatt attempted to find the back of cage, but nothing beat Dunn.Â
- Washington was not done though as Ventura pushed the margin to 6-2 at the break.
Third Quarter
- Dickinson needed less than 90-seconds to score twice as back-to-back wins at X by Backus resulted in markers for Stark and Boyd (6-4).Â
- After Carson Crawford won the ensuing faceoff Jake Arcudi stretched the advantage out to three at 7-4 with not even three minutes gone.
- Two saves by Bognet resulted in shots for Cullen Mulhern, Baughan, Childs and Hyatt, unfortunately, none of them beat Dunn.Â
- The Red and White ended the frame by scoring three of the next four with DC markers coming from Boyd (Hayden Warren assist), Childs and Huggins which cut the deficit to 8-7.
Fourth Quarter
- Just over two minutes in Bunten popped the rock free from Gestole allowing Bunten to feed the ball ahead to McDonald who solved Dunn to tie the score (8-8).
- Boyd, Huggins and Hyatt all let shots fly, but none found the twine. However, Baldini did eventually cash in giving DC a one-goal edge at 9-8 with 8:45 to play.
- Dickinson was not able to hang on to the lead though as Crawford beat Bognet with just under four minutes left.
- The Red and White continued to put all the pressure on the Shoremen posting six shots over the rest of the game resulting in three stops for Dunn forcing overtime.
Overtime One
- Each side got one chance in the period as Nate Winters was shutdown by Bognet inside the opening minute. Dickinson's chance came late when a turnover caused by Warren led to Mulhern ripping one off target.
Overtime Two
- Dickinson was in total control, but the shots from Ben Monroe, Childs and Warren did not test Dunn at all forcing a third frame.
Overtime Three
- Monroe had his chance blocked just over a minute in, which set the stage for Jack Dupuis to find Gestole for the game-winning strike past the keeper.
