HAVERFORD, Pa. - Senior midfielder
Ben Monroe buried a man-up goal with 16 seconds left in the game to lift the 11th-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team past an upset-minded Haverford College by a score of 8-7 on Saturday afternoon in conference play at Swan Field.
First Quarter
- Dickinson tested Haverford keeper Mac Broaddus early in the game as he denied both Drew Stark and Monroe off a turnover caused by Jamie Book.Â
- The Fords would use that energy to get the first goal of the day as Will Weinstein beat Rocco Bognet. However, the Red and White answered with three of their own thanks to Preston Boyd (Tommy Baldini assist), Luke Whalen and Monroe to take a 3-1 lead with seven minutes gone.
- A turnover forced by Ethan Ferrant led to a shot for Ramsey Huggins that was turned away by Broaddus, which resulted in Bognet having to record three saves to keep the lead where it was.Â
- Weinstein picked up his second of the frame with just over a minute remaining to cut the gap to 3-2.
Second Quarter
- Hayden Warren added another caused turnover to his total with 1:04 gone setting the stage for chances from Landen Hyatt, Charlie Baughan, Huggins, Monroe and Whalen unfortunately none of them tested Broaddus.
- Both keepers would be called upon a few minutes later with Bognet shutting down Charlie Vaccaro, while Broaddus had an answer for both Caleb Oliver and Monroe.
- Haverford tallied the next eight shots leading to a pair of Bognet stops as well as a strike for Reid Tietjen to tie the game up going to halftime.
Third Quarter
- Dickinson needed just 53-seconds to take the lead back when Chase Squires won the opening faceoff and got the rock up to Stark for the finish. Just over two minutes later it became 5-3 when Huggins linked up with Boyd.
- Back-to-back Ford turnovers gave DC the ability to continue to open up their lead with Whalen setting up Hyatt for the sixth and Oliver tallying unassisted (7-3).Â
- Haverford did not want to go quietly though on their senior day as the tandem of Nick Snyder and Philip Passalaqua each beat Bognet to cut the deficit down to just two at 7-5 with five minutes left.
- The Devils defense would lock things down over the remainder of the period with the trio of Will McDonald, Bognet and Warren each causing a turnover to prevent any further damage.
Fourth Quarter
- Haverford had a significant edge at the faceoff X throughout the day and after a win on the opening draw Snyder sprinted down the field and buried the rock (7-6).
- The duo of Monroe and Stark would ask questions of Broaddus, but he was up to the task against both to preserve just the one goal deficit.Â
- At the other end, another save by Bognet led to shots from Mac Childs, Baldini, Huggins, Hyatt, Monroe and Stark. However, three more Broaddus stops prevented DC from adding on. His team would ride that momentum to the equalizing tally from Weinstein with 2:55 to play.
- Dickinson as they have done all season showed that "Heart of a Champion" as an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Tiejen with 42 seconds left gave DC a man-up chance for the rest of regulation. That was when Monroe ultimately called "game" as Taner Marusa found him for the game-winner with 15 ticks on the clock.Â
- Haverford won the ensuing faceoff, but before they could organize any offense Ferrant forced a turnover to end the game.
