CARLISLE, Pa. - The top-seeded Dickinson men's lacrosse team could not have begun their quest for a fifth straight Centennial Conference championship in a better way as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead against the visiting second seed Gettysburg College less than 20 minutes into the game. However, the Bullets continued to battle back all night long and ultimately stun the Red and White with a 13-12 overtime win in front of a jam-packed and rowdy Biddle Field crowd on Saturday night.
First Quarter
- An early stop by Rocco Bognet against Nicholas Limberg set the stage for Will Single to connect with Preston Boyd for the strike. Then, following a faceoff win by Ryan Backus, Ben Monroe linked up with Mac Childs to make it 2-0 less than two minutes in.
- A minute later Bognet had the answer for Charlie Johnson resulting in chances from Ramsey Huggins and Drew Stark, before Luke Whalen beat Murphy Hoey (3-0).
- The offense just kept on coming for the Devils with Huggins knocking the ball away from Benny Kasoff which opened the door for Tommy Baldini to push the gap to 4-0 with 5:13 gone.
- Charlie Baughan, Caleb Oliver, Baldini, Monroe and Stark combined for the next six shots forcing one stop by Hoey, while at the other end Bognet denied Kasoff to end the period.
Second Quarter
- It became 5-0 67-seconds into the frame with an unassisted tally for Monroe. A minute after that Whalen connected with Boyd for a 6-0 lead.
- The Bullets then got the offense going some with both Declan Mack and Ethan Kessler striking trimming the margin to 6-2 five minutes in.
- A Bognet save on Vincent Ferrara sent the home side back the other way leading to shots for Boyd, Childs, Huggins, Oliver and Stark unfortunately none of them were able to solve Hoey.
- Gettysburg would take the momentum into the break as Jackson Barroll found Jackson Hearn making it 6-3.
Third Quarter
- Once again it was a stop by Bognet that led to a DC marker as he turned aside Hearn allowing Oliver to ripple the net (7-3).
- Dickinson attempted to add onto their edge, but Landen Hyatt, Boyd and Stark could not best Hoey which gave Hearn the opportunity to knock one off (7-4). However, just over 30-seconds after that Childs buried the rock.
- The Bullets defense then settled down allowing their attack to record seven of the ensuing ten shots with two of them finding the back of the cage making it 8-6 going to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
- The Red and White needed a little bit over 30 seconds to see Hyatt cash in. However, Gettysburg used a 45-second stretch to get tallies by Hearn and Barroll to get within one (9-8) still with 12:31 left.
- After Ethan Ferrant popped the rock free from Hearn, Whalen added another one to push the margin back to a pair (10-8).
- A turnover caused by Sam Bunten against Brady Schwenk resulted in Whalen setting up Stark for an 11-8 advantage at the 7:29 mark.
- Kessler scored off the ensuing faceoff, but Childs had an immediate response to extend the gap up to three once again (12-9).
- Barroll and Kessler each notched an unassisted marker to close within 12-11 with a minute to play.
- Following a save for Bognet on Patrick Maroney, Barroll came up from behind the cage and tucked the ball under the keeper to tie the game.
Overtime
- Chase Squires claimed the opening faceoff and got the ball inside the box allowing DC to take a timeout. Out of the break the Red and White worked the ball around leading to Boyd getting a crack at cage as he was being knocked over. Unfortunately, Hoey was there for the save sending the visitors back the other way.
- Gettysburg would fire four shots towards Bognet with the DC keeper making two saves giving his side another chance to try and win the game. However, Whalen was unable to hold onto the ball at the midfield line as he was under duress which presented Hearn a one-on-one chance with Bognet that he capitalized on for the win.
