Coan Has Strong Start at ITA Regionals

(Fredericksburg, Va.) – Dickinson sophomore Sam Coan (Washington, D.C./Bullis School) had a strong start at the 2019 USTA ITA Southeast Regionals at the University of Mary Washington.

Coan advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins, turning back Christopher Newport's Andy Mason (6-0, 7-5) in the opener and then surviving a three-set match with Swarthmore's John Lathrop, going (6-2, 1-6, 6-4).

Classmate Leonid Sorkin (St. Petersburg, Russia/U. of Nebraska H.S.) went 6-3, 7-5 over Bentley Goodwin (CNU) but suffered a setback in an intense match with Haverford's Kevin Yan (7-6 (6), 7-5) in the round of 32.

Coan and Sorkin played in the Championship Doubles bracket but came up short in an epic battle in the opening round, falling to Patrick MacLean and Matthew Ryan (Salisbury), 8-7(5).

Sophomore Andrew Lai (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater) and first-year Thomas Griffin (Clifton, Va./Woodbury Forest) posted an 8-5 win over St. Mary's but suffered a second-round setback to St. Vincent, 8-3.

Griffin had a tight match but dropped the opener in the B1 singles bracket, falling 7-6, 6-4 to UMW's Grant Perry.

Lai put up a fight in the B3 flight, but fell in a (7-5, 1-6, 11-9) marathon to Ethan Garren of St. Mary's College.

Competition continues on Saturday.
