(Carlisle, Pa.)- The Dickinson
College football team, ranked 25th in the American Football Coaches
Association poll, suffered its first loss of the season, falling to
Johns Hopkins, 23-12, on Homecoming Saturday. |
Playing without All-American receiver Patrick
O'Connor (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and back-up
tailback Gregory Lord (Wyomissing,
Pa./Wyomissing), both out with injuries, the Red Devils
were forced to make some adjustments on offense.
Senior Joe Sandoe (Myerstown,
Pa./Elco) had a big day for the Devils, making seven
catches for 116 yards. Craig Helfer (W. Caldwell,
N.J./Newark Academy) added 68 yards on seven catches
as well.
Senior quarterback Ian Mitchell (Newtown Square,
Pa./Malvern Prep) threw for 202 yards on the day,
adding 60 on the ground.
Tim Smith (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) ran
for 69 yards on 14 carries to lead the Devils in rushing on the
day.
All the Devil points on the day came from the leg of junior
kickerGordon Craig (Grove City, Pa./Grove City).
Craig went 4-for-4 on the day, converting field-goals from 22, 37,
27 and 34 yards.
The Red Devil defense played well against Centennial Conference
rushing leader Andrew Case (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing), holding
him to just 64 rushing before the Blue Jays final drive. Case added
54 yards on that possession to finish with 118 on the day, adding a
pair of touchdowns.
Junior Pat McNeal (Glen Mills,
Pa./Archmere) led the Devils with nine tackles
while Jack Connolly (Wexford, Pa./N.
Allegheny)added seven.
Michael Maxwell (Coatesville,
Pa./Coatesville) made four stops, broke up three
passes and made a key interception early in the fourth quarter.
The Devils struck first when Craig split the uprights from 22
yards out at the 7:47 mark of the first quarter. The Blue Jays
answered almost immediately on a 68 yard touchdown pass from Hewitt
Tomlin (Jackson, TN/Trinity Christian) to Tucker Michels
(Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) just 45 seconds later.
The teams would trade field-goals in the second quarter as JHU
went into the half with a 10-6 lead. The Blue Jays scored again on
a two yard run from Kase, but the point-after attempt failed to
make the score 16-6.
Gordon tacked on two more field-goals to pull the Devils with a
touchdown at 16-12 with 10 seconds remaining in the third
quarter.
The fourth quarter saw solid defense as both teams struggled to
move the football. The Blue Jays went to the ground on their final
drive, eating up 5:41 before Kase found the end zone with 3:24
remaining in the game.
Mike Todisco intercepted a pass with 2:30 on the clock, allowing
Hopkins to run down the clock and secure the win. The Blue Jays
improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
The Red Devils slip to 5-1 and 3-1 on the CC. They are off next
weekend before traveling to Gettysburg to defend the Little Brown
Bucket on Saturday, October 24th.
