Red Devils Rally, Stun #3-Roanoke to Remain Unbeaten

(Salem, Va.) - The Dickinson College men's lacrosse team erupted for six goals in the fourth quarter to shock #3-ranked Roanoke College, 7-6, on Saturday. In a battle of unbeaten teams, the host Maroons took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, and that was all the scoring in opening half.

Roanoke stretched the margin to 5-1, scoring the only three goals of the third period. The Devils came alive after Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) broke through to make the score 5-2.

That triggered a three-goal run to pull the Devils within striking distance with 10:45 remaining in regulation.

Roanoke answered at the 8:08 mark but the Red Devils still had the momentum as Matt Cherry(Radnor, Pa./Radnor) finished a fast break, scoring on an assist from long-stick middie Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) at the 6:49 mark.

It was all Red Devils from that point as Cherry tallied an assist toPat Curley (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St. Joe's), who went aerial just outside the crease to knot the game at 6-6 with 6:22 left to play.

Senior attackman Ted Sirvaitis (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich)found the back of the net with an assist from Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./fairfield Prep) at the 5:28 mark. The Red Devils had their hands full for the final five minutes, but held-off the Maroons with solid defense and strong play in the midfield.

Senior Pat Fillipelli (Devon, Pa/Archbishop Caroll) made a huge interception in the final seconds, reading the play perfectly to give the Devils a key late possession

Cherry led the attack with a goal and two assists while Curley tallied a pair of goals. Chris Breslin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) anchored an outstanding defensive effort, causing three turnovers and controlling three ground balls. Al Golod (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) added four ground balls.

Senior goaltender Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The Hill School)made 11 saves in the cage for the Red Devils. The game marked the first time that Roanoke has been held to less than seven goals since 2007.

Sophomore Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan)won 10-of-15 face-offs, including six in the critical final quarter.

Jeff Keating and Trey Keeley each tallied a goal and an assist to lead Roanoke (5-1) while Jake Dorsey stopped 13 shots in the Maroon cage.

The Red Devils are off to the best start in school history, improving to 6-0 on the season. This start matches the school record, set by the 1958 national championship team for most wins to start a season at six. The 1958 Red Devils also started 6-0 and finished 9-2 on the year.

Dickinson travels to York College on Tuesday to face-off with the Spartans at 3:30 pm.
