(Swarthmore, Pa.) - The
Dickinson College men's lacrosse team passed its first Centennial
Conference test, holding off Swarthmore, 7-6 on Saturday. The Red
Devils, ranked 10th in the USILA national poll, improved to 8-0 on
the season. They extend their school record best start and school
record unbeaten streak to eight games. |
The Centennial Conference has proven to be one of the toughest
around, and this year that may be more apparent than ever. With the
exception of Gettysburg's 14-2 win over Muhlenberg, every
conference game this season has been decided by one goal.
Sophomore Sam Greenberg (Owings Mills,
Md./McDonogh)tallied the last three goals for Dickinson
and the defense held on in the final seconds to lead the Devils to
victory in their conference opener.
The Devils struck first and the teams traded goals with
Swarthmore taking a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Swarthmore added one to start the second period and held a 5-3
advantage at the break.
Dickinson dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Garnet 3-0
to take a 6-5 lead into the final 15 minutes. Greenberg tied the
game with an assist from Matt Cherry (Radnor,
Pa./Radnor) and put the Devils up on an extra-man
goal, assisted by Chris Dodson (Bethesda,
Md./Landon).
Greenberg picked-up a ground ball and scored unassisted with
8:31 remaining in regulation to give the Devils a 7-5 cushion.
Tyler Bradshaw broke though, scoring with 2:20 left to play to pull
the Garnet within one.
Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New
Canaan) won the face-off, giving Dickinson a key
possession. Swarthmore forced a turnover and went man-up following
a roughing penalty on the Devils.
Senior goaltender Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The
Hill School)turned away one shot and another hit the post
with seven seconds to play, but the Devils would hold on for the
win.
Greenberg finished with three goals while Dodson added two goals
and an assist. Cherry scored once and tallied two assists.
SeniorTed Sirvaitis (Greenwich,
Conn./Greenwich) also scored for the Devils.
Murray dominated the face-offs, winning 13-of-17 on the day,
controlling nine ground balls and handing out an
assist. Chris Breslin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden
City) controlled five ground balls on defense
while Dewey Dubord (Freeport, Maine/Governor
Dummer) caused four turnovers and picked-up five GBs
in the midfield. John Haire (Darien,
Conn./Darien)forced three turnovers on the day.
Magann stopped eight shots in the game, adding four ground balls
and a caused turnover.
Bradshaw led Swarthmore (1-4, 0-2) with two goals and two
assists while Keven Friedenberg made 15 saves in goal.
The Red Devils (8-0, 1-0) return home to face #1-ranked
Gettysburg College on Wednesday. Opening face-off is set for 3:30
pm.
