White K's 17, Santoro Hits Grand Slam in Devil Sweep

(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College baseball team started the 2010 campaign with a strong showing in a pair of wins over visiting Lancaster Bible College. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Lancaster. The Devils won the opener 4-1 and used an explosive offense for a 16-1 win in the nightcap.

 

Sophomore pitcher Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury School)tossed a no-hitter in the opener, striking out 17 Chargers in the eight-inning opener. White set a Centennial Conference record for strikeouts by first-year, recording 53 last spring. His 17 today ties him for the third best strikeout performance in CC history.

 

The Devils were the visitors in the scorebook, pushing one run across in the top of the third inning. Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) was hit by a pitch and scored on a double from Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal).

 

Chad Hollinger scored on a balk to tie the game in the bottom of third after reaching on a walk. White struck out the side in the fourth and recorded two strikeouts in the sixth and seventh innings to keep the Chargers in check.

 

The Devils came alive in the top of the eight, scoring three runs with the help of doubles from Tyler Rosa (Carmel by the Sea, Calif./Stevenson School) and Evan Farha (Potomac, Md./Churchill).

 

White then shut the door with a ground out and two strikeouts.

 

Sterling and Farha both went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Devils in game one.

 

First-year James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) highlighted game two with a grand slam homerun in the first inning as the Devils jumped out to 10-0 lead.

 

Lancaster Bible would answer in the bottom of the first but the Red Devil pitchers would keep them off the board for the rest of the way.

 

Sterling went 3-for-6 with another double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Mike Schuster (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) drove in three runs behind two hits while Rosa went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

 

Santoro finished the game 3-for-5 with six RBIs. Bobby Williston (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) came on to go 2-for-2 with a run scored.

 

Evan Fitzpatrick (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) earned the start and the win, striking out three in two innings of work. Justin Williams (Fort Myers, Fla./Hotchkiss School) recorded three strikeouts as well in two innings of work.

 

The Red Devils (2-0) are scheduled to play at Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday. Field conditions could move the game to Carlisle or lead to a postponement.
