(Carlisle, Pa.) - The #5-ranked
Dickinson College men's lacrosse team set a school record, winning
its 12th game of the season, defeating Washington College, 12-10,
on Saturday afternoon. |
The Shoremen did not make things easy for the Devils. Dickinson
jumped out to a strong start, scoring a pair of goals in the
opening minute on the way to a 4-1 lead.
Senior Ted Sirvaitis (Greenwich,
Conn./Greenwich) scored to put the Devils in front
3-1 at the end of the first quarter and assisted Sam
Greenberg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) to start the
second.
Greenberg answered a Washington goal to make the score 5-2 with
5:52 to play in the half. The Shoremen rallied to pull within one
at the break, 5-4.
Washington struck quickly to start the third quarter, scoring
just 12 seconds into the second half. They added another at the
11:44 mark to take their first lead of the game, 6-5.
Dickinson rattled-off three straight goals to regain the lead,
8-6, at the end of the third period. The teams traded goals
throughout the fourth quarter with Washington scoring a
short-handed goal to make the score 10-9 Dickinson with 5:26
remaining in regulation.
Sam Abramson (Alexandria,
Va./Potomac) stretched the margin to a pair with an
unassisted tally at the 4:19 mark. Greenberg found the back of the
cage, scoring off an assist from Chris Dodson
(Bethesda, Md./Landon) to put the Devils in front
12-9 with 3:22 left to play.
Washington would tack on a goal by Dave Lundquist with 2:37 on
the clock. The Red Devils kept their composure down the stretch to
secure the win.
Greenberg finished with a game-high five goals while Sirvaitis
tallied three goals and two assists. Dodson and Abramson each
scored once and added two assists while
first-year Matt Cherry (Radnor,
Pa./Radnor) scored twice and had one assist.
Senior Al Golod (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring
Harbor)anchored a strong defensive effort, controlling
eight ground balls and causing three turnovers on the day.
Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New
Canaan) won six face-offs, picked-up five GBs and
dished out an assist.
Pat Curley (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St.
Joseph) won 3-of-6 face-offs while Ward
Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) chipped in
with an assist, threading the needle to Greenberg in the third
quarter.
Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The Hill
School) made 14 saves in goal for the Red Devils.
Tom Rixey and Doug Herdegen each scored two goals and added an
assist to lead the Washington (8-3, 1-6) attack. Matt Miller
stopped 19 shots on the afternoon.
The Red Devils improve to 12-1 and 5-1 in the Centennial
Conference. They are home again next Friday night, hosting Ursinus
College at 7:00 pm.
