(Carlisle, Pa.) - The #5-ranked
Dickinson College men's lacrosse team secured a bid to the
Centennial Conference playoffs with a 13-8 win over visiting
Ursinus College. The Red Devils add to their school record for wins
in a season, improving to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in the
conference. |
Severe storms delayed the start 45 minutes before the Red Devils
brought some thunder of their own. Following a scoreless seven
minutes, senior Ted Sirvaitis (Greenwich,
Conn./Greenwich)struck twice to put the Devils in front,
2-0 at the 4:22 mark of the first quarter.
Sirvaitis would assist on three of the Devils next four goals as
they jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the second period.
After Jeff Ocampo scored for Ursinus, senior Oliver
Thompson (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) answered with
an assist fromSam Abramson (Alexandria,
Va./Potomac) and Brendan O'Brien (Garden
City, N.Y./Chaminade) finished a pass from Sirvaitis
to make the score 4-1 at the end of the first.
Sirvaitis fed classmate Chris Dodson (Bethesda,
Md./Landon) to trigger a 5-0 run that put the Devils
in front 9-1. Ocampo found the net again with 2:31 to play in the
half before the Devils added one before the break. Abramson fired a
shot into the net with an assist from Ward Gruppo
(Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) with just two seconds on
the clock.
Ursinus made a run at in the third quarter, outscoring the
Devils 4-1. Abramson finished another assist from Gruppo to break
up the run in the middle of the third period.
Leading 11-6, Dodson made it dozen off Sirvaitis' fourth assist
of the night to start the fourth quarter. The Bears would tack on
two more goals in the final 6:05, but could not catch the Devils.
Abramson finished things off for Dickinson with a goal at the 4:50
mark.
The Red Devil defense was outstanding all night while the
midfield helped force 26 turnovers. Al Golod (Lloyd
Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) caused five
turnovers and controlled six ground balls to lead the
way. Chris Breslin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden
City) forced three turnovers and had four GBs.
Sirvaitis led the attack with two goals and four
assists. Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The Hill
School) made three saves to earn his 12th win of the
season.
Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New
Canaan) won 10 face-offs and picked-up five ground
balls while Andrew Blomquist (Bel Air,
Md./Gilman) claimed 3-of-4 in the game.
Eric Farris and Ocampo each finished with three goals to lead
Ursinus (8-4, 3-4). Matt Columbini stopped four shots before T.J.
Magnani came in to make 10 saves, including seven in the third
period.
The Red Devils (13-1, 6-1) travel to McDaniel College next
Saturday for the regular season finale. Opening face-off is set for
1:00 pm.
