(Carlisle, Pa.) - The #5-ranked
Dickinson College men's lacrosse team scored the final four goals
of the game to overtake visiting Haverford College, 9-8, in a
Centennial Conference thriller. |
In typical fashion for this season, both teams used strong
goalkeeping and solid defense to keep the scoring to minimum early
in the game.
The 'Fords struck first, just 46 seconds into the contest before
the Devils answered with goals from Sam Greenberg
(Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) and Ted
Sirvaitis (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) to take a 2-1
lead.
Haverford tied the game with 3:42 remaining in the first period
and tacked on the only two scores of the second to hold a 4-2
advantage at the break.
The 'Fords came out firing to open the second half, scoring at
the 11:28 mark and again at 10:18 to stretch the margin to
6-2. Sam Abramson (Alexandria,
Va./Potomac) found the back of the net
on Chris Dodson's (Bethesda,
Md./Landon) second assist of the day with 8:04 on the
clock in the third.
Max Hjelm closed out the third period with an unassisted goal at
the 2:21 mark to give Haverford a 7-3 advantage heading into the
final quarter.
The Red Devils saved their best for last and wasted little time
making a move as Greenberg struck twice in the opening three
minutes to pull the Devils within two at 7-5.
Myles Monaghan broke through to stretch the lead to 8-5 with
8:42 remaining in regulation. It was all Red Devils from that
point.
Dodson finished a feed from Dewey Dubord (Freeport,
Maine/Governor Dummer) to trigger the five-goal Devil
run at the 6:50 mark.
Greenberg picked-up a loose ball and fired it into the net to
pull Dickinson within a goal with 5:09 left to play.
Dodson tallied again, off an assist from Sirvaitis to pull the
Devils even at the 2:59 mark. The Red Devils gained possession and
following a timeout tallied the game-winner as Ward
Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) found
himself wide open in front of crease. He scored off a feed from
Abramson with 2:15 on the clock.
The Devils were able to hold on for the final 2:15, winning
their 10th game of the season, improving to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in
the conference.
Greenberg finished with four goals on the day to lead the Devils
while Dodson added two goals and two assists.
Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The Hill
School) came up big in the Red Devil cage, making 15
saves and controlling a game-high seven ground
balls. Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New
Canaan) tallied seven ground balls as well, also
winning 12-of-21 face-offs on the afternoon.
Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Basking
Ridge) turned in an outstanding performance in the
midfield. Chris Breslin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden
City) and Al Golod (Lloyd Harbor,
N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each controlled five
GBs.
Joe Banno turned in a strong performance in goal for Haverford
(5-5, 1-3), making 20 saves.
The Red Devils (10-1, 3-1) travel to Muhlenberg on Wednesday for
a 7:00 meeting with Mules.
