| (Gettysburg, Pa.) - The
#5-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team suffered a
heartbreaking loss in the Centennial Conference semifinals, falling
in overtime to Haverford, 12-11. |
The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter with
Haverford holding a 4-3 advantage at the end of the period.
The 'Fords dominated the second quarter, using a 5-1 run to take
a 9-4 lead into halftime. Four different players tallied for
Haverford in the period.
The Red Devils returned the favor, taking control in the third
quarter, outscoring the 'Fords 4-1. Haverford struck first in the
fourth to stretch the lead to 10-7.
The Red Devils rallied with three straight to tie the game,
10-10, with 6:08 remaining in regulation.
The teams continued to battle down to the wire as both defenses
held strong over the final six minutes. The teams both dodged
Bullets down the stretch and through the first overtime.
The 'Fords came out of a timeout and Travis Gregory found a lane
on the right side to tally the game-winner with 2:07 remaining in
the second overtime to send Haverford to the final.
Senior Chris Dodson (Bethesda,
Md./Landon) scored two goals and dished out three
assists to lead the Devils on attack. Ted Sirvaitis
(Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) scored three goals to
put him over the 100-point mark for his career.
First-year Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge,
N.J./Ridge)turned in an outstanding performance,
controlling a game-high seven ground balls, causing a pair of
turnovers and scoring a goal in the Devils' fourth-quarter run.
Senior long-stick Chris Breslin (Garden City,
N.Y./Garden City)added a goal as well while causing a pair
of turnovers and controlling three ground balls.
Pat Curley (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St.
Joe's) won 11-of-17 face-offs, including 5-of-6 in
the third period.
Senior Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The Hill
School) made six saves and controlled three ground
balls. He made a huge, game-saving save in the first overtime.
Zack Cohen led Haverford (10-5) with four goals and two assists
while Max Hjelm added three goals. Joe Banno made 14 saves.
The Red Devils drop just their second game of the season,
slipping to 14-2 on the year. They will await a possible NCAA
at-large bid, announced next week.
Haverford will face top-seed Gettysburg in the conference final
on Sunday. Face-off is scheduled for 12:00 at Gettysburg.
