(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team turned in another strong performance, suffering a heartbreaker in overtime, as Franklin & Marshall escaped with a 69-68 win on Wednesday night.
Senior Matt Dolan (Chalfont, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) didn't get a great look, but launched a last-second shot that was just off the mark as time expired. The veteran forward played an outstanding game, scoring a game-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, adding six rebounds.
First-year Brian Gerney (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) tied the game on a lay-up with 17 seconds remaining in overtime, drawing a foul in the process. He converted the free throw to put the Devils in front, 68-67. Georgio Milligan drove to the basket and drew a foul with just 3.6 seconds on the clock. He sank both free throws to give the edge back to the Diplomats.
The Devils called a timeout at half court with just 1.9 seconds remaining for a final shot. The Diplomats held on with some strong defense on the in-bounds, forcing an off-balance shot from Dolan to secure the win.
Dickinson pulled in front by six early in the contest before F&M answered to take a five point lead later in the half. The Diplomats took a 27-23 advantage at the break. F&M pulled ahead by eight points early in the second half, but the Red Devils made a 14-6 run to knot the game, 37-37, at the 12:42 mark.
With the Red Devils trailing by three, Gerney drove to the basket pull the Devils within one, 56-55, with 4:36 remaining in regulation. He answered a Hayk Gyokchyan bucket with a three-point bomb to tie the game at 58 with 1:45 left to play.
Gyokchyan made a strong move on the other end to put the Diplomats back on top, but junior Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) would answer with another three-pointer to give the Devils the lead, 61-60, with just 51 seconds remaining in the game. Milligan hit one-of-two free throws and the Devils missed a last second attempt to send the game into overtime.
Milligan struck first in overtime but Dolan immediately answered with a quick score on the other end off an assist from first-year Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Steve Tolliver hit a pair of free throws to put F&M up, 65-63, with 1:47 remaining. James McNally then traded layups with Dolan to keep the Diplomats in front at the 43 second mark.
That would lead to Gerney's heroic three-point play, which unfortunately wouldn't be enough as Milligan's free throws in the final seconds secured the win for F&M.
Dolan led the way with a game-high 18 points. Gerney finished with 14 points, hitting 6-of-9 field-goals. Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) tallied nine points, three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Hummelstown) added nine points as well, dishing out two key assists late in the game. Honig recorded seven rebounds while sophomore Doug Jakiela (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) chipped in with seven points.
McNally led F&M (12-4, 7-2 CC) with 17 points and six rebounds while Milligan finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Red Devils slip to 7-9 overall and 5-4 in the Centennial Conference. They host Johns Hopkins University on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
