(New Market, Va) – The Dickinson College baseball team opened the season with a sweep of Lancaster Bible College behind some strong pitching performances. The Red Devils won the opener, 12-2, and captured the nightcap, 9-2.
Senior right-hander Evan Fitzpatrick (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) threw six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 11 on the day. He was pulled only after reaching a designated pitch count, allowing junior Keith Bolles (Essex, Conn./Hopkins School) to come on and close the door, recording a pair of strikeouts in the seventh.
Senior Mike Schuster (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) went 4-for-4 on the day with a triple and three RBIs. Sophomore James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) was just a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a homerun, double and single, driving in four runs.
Junior Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. Classmate Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBIs. Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) added two hits as well.
In the nightcap, the Red Devils broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth, erupting for seven runs on eight hits. Ben Sciambi (Port Monmouth, N.J./Ridge) broke the tie to start things off in the six, driving in two runs with two hits in the game.
First-year Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) drove in two runs with a double in his first collegiate at bat, going 1-for-2.
First-year Will Daley (Benton Harbor, Mich./Lake Michigan Catholic) had a strong outing in his collegiate debut as well. He went all seven innings, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out eight on the day.
The Red Devils are in action again in New Market on Sunday, facing the University of Pitt-Bradford in a double-header. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
