(New Market, Va.) – The Dickinson College baseball team split a double-header with the University of Pitt-Bradford on Sunday to finish the weekend 3-1 overall. The Devils struggled in the opener, falling 12-1 but regrouped to win the nightcap, 8-7, in eight innings.
Pitt-Bradford pushed across single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to hold a 3-1 lead. They tacked in three in more in the fifth. Some control issues led to a five-run sixth for the Panthers. They tallied one in the seventh for the final of 12-1.
Senior Mike Schuster (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) had another hot bat for the Devils, going 2-for-3 and scoring the Devils' lone run on an RBI double from junior Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) in the third inning.
Senior Bart Marchant (Lakeville, Conn./Hotchkiss) and Steve Anzalone (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) each recorded hits as well while Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) reached base safely in 2-of-3 at-bats.
Junior Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury School) suffered the loss, but recorded five strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Panthers used a walk and a pair of base hits to take an early 2-0 lead in game two. This time the Devils answered with a three runs in the top of the second with doubles from Marchant and sophomore James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose), and RBI singles by Schuster and junior Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown).
Marchant doubled again in the top of the third and immediately scored on a single from Sterling. Sterling later came around to score on another RBI from Horan to give the Devils a 5-2 lead. A two-run homer by Derek Smith and a Devil miscue led to four runs in the bottom of the inning, giving Pitt-Bradford a 6-5 advantage.
Smith launched his second homerun in the fifth to stretch the Panther lead to 7-5. Dickinson capitalized on a couple of Panther errors and another double from Santoro to tie the game with a pair of unearned runs in the top half of the seventh inning. Santoro scored on a passed ball and Horan came around to score off a single from Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) to force extra innings.
Marchant singled and stole second to start the top of the eighth inning. He came around off the bat of Santoro, who reached on an error to give the Devils the lead. Sterling came on in relief to earn the save after closing the door in the bottom of the eighth.
Andrew Mauro (Washington, D.C./Mercersburg) earned the start, recording six strikeouts. Horan recorded four strikeouts in two innings of relief, earning the win.
Santoro finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Horan added three hits, driving in two and scoring once on the day. Marchant came around three times off three hits while Kaufman reached safely in all five at-bats, belting out three singles and drawing a pair of walks.
The Red Devils improve to 3-1 overall. They are scheduled to host Messiah College in their home opener on Saturday. The first pitch of a double-header is scheduled for 12:00 pm at MacPhail Field.
