(Carlisle, Pa.) – The 12th-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team stormed out of the gates and held off a late run by visiting Ursinus for an 11-8 win on Saturday.
The Red Devils took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period and opened the game with seven straight goals to hold a 7-0 advantage with 3:59 remaining in the first half. The Bears tacked on a pair to cut the margin to 7-2 at halftime.
The third quarter belonged to the Bears as Junior Jeff Ocampo tallied the only three goals of the period to cap a five-goal run and pull Ursinus within two at 7-5. The teams traded scores throughout the final 15 minutes.
Sophomore Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) struck off an assist from first-year Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) just 26 seconds into the fourth to put the Devils up, 8-5. The Bears answered before Cannon assisted Matt Cherry (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) and then scored on his own to give Dickinson a 10-6 advantage with 5:19 remaining.
Ocampo added another with Beitel answering off an assist from Cherry with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Andrew Bean closed out the scoring with a tally at the eight second mark.
Cannon turned in another outstanding performance, scoring three goals and dishing out four assists. Cherry tallied three assists to go with his goal while Beitel finished with two goals and an assist.
Bobby Kingsley (Bethesda, Md./St. Albans) struck twice while first-year Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) added a goal and an assist. Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) and Reiley Crosby (Monkton, Md./Hereford) each scored as well.
Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made eight saves and controlled four ground balls in the Devil net. Sophomore Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Basking Ridge) caused four turnovers and controlled six ground balls while Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) picked-up four GBs and caused three turnovers. Senior John Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) also turned in a strong performance on the defensive end.
Parker Waldron (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) won 6-of-12 face-offs and controlled six GBs. Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won 5-of-10 and added four GBs.
Ocampo led the way for Ursinus with four goals and two assists. Josh Baker made 16 saves on goal for the Bears (6-2, 1-1).
The Red Devils improve to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. They return to McDaniel on Wednesday afternoon to compete the second half of a suspended game from earlier this week.
