(Swarthmore, Pa.) - The Dickinson College baseball team suffered a pair of losses in its Centennial Conference double-header at Swarthmore on Saturday. The Garnet survived a 7-6 affair in the opener, going nine innnings. They erupted for six runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 12-9 win in the nightcap.
The Devils scored four unearned runs to start things off in the first inning of game one. Bart Marchant (Lakeville, Conn./Hotchkiss) led the way with a two-RBI single in the inning.
The Garnet wasted no time answering, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning. They stretched the lead to 6-4 on solo homerun in the third inning.
Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) singled, stole second and eventually scored as Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) drew a bases-loaded walk in teh fourth. Marchant singled in the fifth came around to score as Mike Schuster (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) reached on an error to tie the game, 6-6 in the fifth.
That score would hold until the bottom of the ninth as Swarthmore used back-to-back doubles to score the game-winner.
Junior Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury) suffered the loss, recording four strikeouts in a complete game effort. Marchant, Sterling and Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) each recorded two hits in the opener.
The Red Devils had another big inning in game two, scoring five runs in the third to erase a 1-0 deficit. The Garnet pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings while the Devils used a pair of doubles from Ben Sciambi (Port Monmouth, N.J./Ridge) and Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford).
Swarthmore tied things up with three in the sixth as the teams battled back and forth. The Devils answered again in the top of the seventh as Horan was hit by a pitch and later scored off the bat of Sciambi.
A six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh would prove to be the difference. The Devils fought back to two more runs in the eighth, but that would be the final, 12-9.
Sciambi went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the nightcap. James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) added a two-run homer in the third and finished with four RBIs in game two. First-year Will Daley (Benton Harbor, Mich./Lake Michigan Catholic) suffered the loss on the mound.
The Red Devils slip to 13-6 on the season and 0-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Johns Hopkins on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
