(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's lacrosse team came out on top of a nationally-ranked showdown on Saturday, holding off #9-ranked Haverford, 9-8. The 11th-ranked Red Devils improve to 9-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference while the 'Fords slip to 7-3 and 2-2.
Haverford struck first, scoring a pair of unassisted goals to take a 2-0 lead with 6:44 remaining in the first quarter. The Devils answered as first-year Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) fed Bobby Kingsley (Bethesda, Md./St. Albans) with 1:23 on the clock.
Jason Leeds stretched the lead to 3-1 before the Devils came alive, scoring four straight goals in the final 6:29 to lead 5-3 at halftime. Senior Pat Curley (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) scored an extra-man goal with an assist from sophomore Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) to trigger the run.
Curley returned the favor, feeding Beitel for a goal at the 2:57 mark. Junior Richard Craft (Newtown Square, Pa./Episcopal) found some open space to drive and score with 1:15 remaining before Cannon hit Kingsley for his second goal of the game with 41 seconds to play in the half.
Max Hjelm capitalized on a extra-man opportunity with an assist from Travis Gregory to pull Haverford within 5-4 early in the third quarter. Cannon fed Beitel, then scored himself with an assist from Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) two minutes later to put the Devils up, 7-4 at the end of the quarter.
Beitel traded goals Hjelm and Nick Shoen to put the Devils in front, 9-6, with 7:49 to play in regulation. The 'Fords tried to rally as Gregory scored with an assist from Hjelm, and Will Sangree struck with just 36 seconds on the clock.
The Devils would hold on to remain in first in the Centennial Conference at 9-1 and 3-0. Beitel had another big day, scoring four goals and handing out an assist. Cannon tied the school record for assists by a first-year with his 24th. He broke the school mark for points by a rookie with his 47th of the season, scoring once and dishing out four assists.
Sophomore goaltender Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made 13 saves and controlled five ground balls. The Red Devil defense was solid all afternoon. First-year Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's ) picked-up five GBs and caused a pair of turnovers.
Junior Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) turned in a strong performance as well, controlling 11-of-18 face-offs and seven GBs on the day.
The Red Devils travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday to face the Bullets at 4:00 pm.
