Devil Men Drop Heartbreaker at Gettysburg 5-4

(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's tennis team posted a 7-2 win at Gettysburg College while the men dropped a heartbreaker, falling 5-4 to the Bullets.

 

Sophomore Alysia Rodgers (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) and Shannon Lavery (Huntington, W. Va./Huntington) captured straight set wins in the first and third singles flights after winning in doubles, 8-4.

 

The Devils claimed the top five singles flights, all in straight sets. Joelle Nitzberg (W. Windsor, N.J./W. Windsor Plainsboro S.) won the second flight (7-6, 6-0) and joined Carla Cox (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown Friends) for an 8-6 victory in the second doubles flight.

 

Sarah Woodward (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester) and Nora Hajnoczky (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) won the fourth and fifth singles flights.

 

The Devils, ranked 13th in the Atlantic South Region, improve to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Elizabethtown College on Thursday at 4:00 pm.

 

The Devil men slipped to 6-5 as well, falling to 2-3 in conference play. Gettysburg won two points in doubles, capturing the second and third flights. Ross Anstaett (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier Twp.) and Will Golinkin (Houston, Texas/Kincaid) earned the point in the top doubles flight with an 8-6 win.

 

Anstaett won the top singles flight (6-2, 6-2). Dixon Blue (Westminster, Md./McDonogh) rallied past Will Brinks in the fifth flight and Kurt Mendelson (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) won the point at number three.

 

The Bullets escaped with the win, capturing second, fourth and sixth singles. All three matches went to three sets with Mike McLaughlin and Will Golinkin battling in the second spot until almost dark.

 

The Red Devils travel to Washington College on Saturday.
