(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson College baseball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking, one-run losses at Ursinus College on Saturday. The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to post a 6-5 win in the opener. They rallied with four in the bottom of the ninth to overtake the Devils in the nightcap, 8-7.
A lead-off double led to a run in the bottom of the first for Ursinus. The Devils bats erupted in the third as they pushed across five runs behind seven hits, including a pair of doubles from Bart Marchant (Lakeville, Conn./Hotchkiss School) and Evan Hennessy (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), and a triple by Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal).
The Bears scored two in the bottom of the inning as Brandon Sullivan picked up his second double of the game. He would double and score again in the fourth inning, adding his second RBI of the game as well. Garrett Smith recorded his third RBI of the game, driving in two with a single to left center.
Chris Ryder came on to hold the Devils to just two hits to earn the win on the mount. Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury School) suffered the loss, scattering seven hits while striking out six on the day.
Mike Schuster (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) led off game two with a single and scored on an RBI single from sophomore James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) to put the Devils on the board in first inning. Schuster picked up and RBI in the second inning, scoring Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area), who reached on a walk.
Ursinus capitalized on an error and a pair of walks to score an unearned run. The Devils almost hit for the cycle in the third inning. Santoro singled, Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) doubled and Ben Sciambi (Port Monmouth, N.J./Ridge) went over the fence in right center with a three-run homer.
The Bears scored two in the third and one in the fifth to cut the Devil lead to 5-4. Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) singled and scored off an RBI from Sciambi in the eighth. Hennessy singled and scored in the top of the ninth to put the Devils up, 7-4.
The Bears would rally with two outs in the ninth, however, as a pair of walks and two hit batters led to one run and a pair of singles scored three more to give the Bears the win, 8-7.
Santoro finished 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Sciambi drove in four runs with a pair of hits. Kaufman, Rosa' and Schuster each recorded a pair of hits in the nightcap.
