(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team rallied to take a late lead over 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall, but the Diplomats held on for the home win, 65-62, on Wednesday night.
A low scoring start saw the Diplomats with an 8-4 lead with 14:09 remaining in the first half. The game was close throughout the entire first half. F&M made a small run but the Devils answered to keep things even.
The Diplomats stretched the lead to 30-23 before sophomore Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) hit his third three-pointer to end a half in as many games, cutting the deficit to 30-26 at the break.
The Diplomats stretched a 31-30 lead to 38-30 at the 15:37 mark of the second half. They led 50-43 with just over nine minutes remaining in regulation. The Devils rallied from 52-45 to 54-52, capped by a pair of Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) free throws at the 5:23 mark.
First-year Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) knocked-down a three-pointer to give Dickinson a 55-54 lead with 4:19 to play in regulation. A pair of Landy free throws put the Devils up, 57-54.
F&M scored and then stole the ball to take back the lead, 58-57. Wixted answered with a lay-up as the teams traded leads. John Salandra finished an assist from Georgio Milligan to put F&M back on top, 60-59, with 45 seconds to play.
The Devils missed on the other end and were forced to foul, putting Milligan on the line. He hit one of two free throws to stretch the margin to three. Another miss and foul put Brandon Beckford on the line. He hit both to give F&M a 63-59 lead with 12 seconds on the clock.
A repeat scenario led to Beckford sinking two more free throws before Honig drained a three at the buzzer for the final of 65-62.
Wixted led the Devils with 20 points and seven rebounds while Honig finished with 18 points behind a trio of three-pointers and 5-of-6 performance from the line.
Landy went 4-for-5 from the line, adding eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) tallied five points and four rebounds.
Milligan led the Diplomats (15-1, 8-1 CC) with a game-high 21 points, dishing out six assists and making four steals on the night.
The Red Devils slip to 7-9 overall and 4-5 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Johns Hopkins on Saturday for a 3:00 pm tip-off.
