(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #3-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team opened the season with a strong showing, turning back visiting Lycoming, 17-7, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Devils took a few minutes to get into rhythm before junior Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) struck off an assist from senior captain, Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac), who made his return to the field after missing last season with an injury.

Junior Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) scored twice around another tally from Beitel to put the Devils in front, 4-0, at the end the of the first quarter. Sophomore Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) dished out an assist to Leon to end the first and finished an assist from Beitel to open the second to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The Devils rattled-off 10 straight goals before the Warriors capitalized on an extra-man opportunity with Stephen Romano scoring at the 4:36 mark of the second period. Abramson answered just 27 seconds later to put the Devils in front, 11-1, at halftime.

The Red Devils came out on fire in the third quarter, netting four goals in the opening four minutes. Senior captain Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) started the run, scoring just 2:36 after the break. Cannon tallied back-to-back goals with the second coming off an assist from first-year Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) at the 11:09 mark. Sophomore Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won the next face-off and went right to goal, scoring just six seconds later to give Dickinson a 15-1 advantage.

The Warriors finished the third quarter strong, scoring four straight goals to make the score, 15-5. Matt McCaffery tallied an extra-man goal with 8:28 remaining in the game, scoring off an assist from Sean Reilly.

Sophomore Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) put a pair of goals on the board at the 5:44 mark and with 1:51 remaining. Ethan Payne broke through for a final tally for Lycoming for 47 second on the clock for the final of 17-7.

Beitel and Cannon each finished with three goals and an assist while Abramson tallied two goals and a pair of assists in his return.

Junior captain Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) controlled the midfield, causing three turnovers and picking up six ground balls. The long-stick middie made his way into the attack to score off a fast break in the second quarter as well.

Sophomore Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) and Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) combined for five caused turnovers and five ground balls to anchor the Red Devil defense. Junior Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made five saves in goal while Max Pawk (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) came on to stop four shots in the final 10 minutes.

The Devils were dominant on face-offs, winning 20-of-28 on the day. Senior Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won 14-of-21 and controlled nine ground balls. Moore won 6-of-7, adding four GBs.

Romano finished with four goals to lead Lycoming (0-1) while Payne struck twice. Andrew Hauk recorded 20 saves in goal for the Warriors.

The Red Devils are off to a 1-0 start. They travel to the St. Paul's school on Saturday to face St. Mary's College of Maryland at 1:00 pm.
