(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson College men's basketball team won a key Centennial game at one of the toughest gyms in the conference. The Red Devils used a strong start and held off a late rally by host Washington College to move into second in the standings with a 79-74 win.
Washington struck first but the Devils answered, taking a 20-9 lead over the opening 10 minutes of the game. The Shoremen cut the lead to 24-21 before the Devils closed out the half with an 11-4 stretch to lead, 35-25, at the break. Sophomore Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) has made a habit of draining three-pointers to close out the half this season. He sank another today, with seven second remaining in the first half.
Washington closed the gap to 38-34 at the 17:13 mark. The Red Devils built the lead back to nine as senior Chris Heine (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) knocked-down a three-pointer with 14:38 on the clock.
The Shoremen erased a seven-point deficit with a 12-4 tilt to take the lead, 52-51, on a three-pointer from Sal Schittino with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. The game would remain tight down the stretch as the lead stayed within four for both teams in the final minutes.
Washington led for the final time, 63-61, at the 5:18 mark. First-year Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) completed an old-fashion three-point play to put the Devils back up, 64-63. Dickinson would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.
Washington kept battling, pulling within a point on three occasions in the final five minutes. Schittino hit a three to make the score, 75-74, with just 31 seconds to play. Honig sank one-of-two free throws and the Devils held on the defensive end.
Heine knocked-down a pair of free throws to stretch the margin to 78-74 with two seconds on the clock. He was fouled again in the final second, making one-of-two for the final of 79-74.
Wixted finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 25 points while controlling 13 rebounds. He went a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line and dished out four assists. Honig tallied 17 points, six assists and a pair of three-point field-goals on the day.
Sophomore Thomas McInerney (York, Pa./York Suburban) had another strong outing in his third start, scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds to go with two assists and a pair of steals.
Kevin Breslin finished with 22 points, all in the second half, to lead Washington (13-8, 9-5). He hit 9-of-11 free throws, adding a pair of assists. Schittino tallied 12 points, hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
The Red Devils improve to 12-9 overall and 9-5 in the Centennial Conference. They move a half-game in front of the Shoremen with a sweep of the season series. Dickinson returns home to face Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.
