(Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson College baseball team dropped a Centennial Conference double-header at Haverford on Saturday. The Devils suffered a 12-4 setback in the opener and a 7-6, 11-inning heartbreaker in the nightcap.
The 'Fords score five runs in the third inning and added four more in the fifth to lead 9-2. They tacked on one in the seventh and a pair in the eighth with the Devils scoring twice in the top of the eighth for the final of 12-4.
A double and a homerun triggered the four-run third for Haverford. They used a pair of doubles and a three-run bomb to add four more in the fifth.
Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) hit a two-run homerun over the right field wall in the top of the fourth.
Haverford pushed across another insurance run with a sacrifice bunt in the seventh. The Devils scored twice in the inning as Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) doubled in two runs.
A two-run homer led to the final two runs for Haverford.
Horan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Kaufman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) suffered the loss on the hill. He struck out four in five innings. Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) came on to record a pair of strikeouts in one inning of relief.
In game two, the Devils scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) singled, stole second and came in to score and put the Devils on the board. Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) homered to put the Devils up, 2-0.
Haverford tied the game with four hits and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tripled and scored on a balk, and Sterling homered to put the Devils back in front, 4-2.
The 'Fords tied the game on a two-run homer and took the lead as Mike Tentilucci stole home to give the hosts a 5-4 advantage. Three straight singles led to another run in the eighth.
Joseph Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll) pinch-hit for a double in the ninth and pinch-runner Conor Foote (Narberth, Pa./Lower Marion) scored on a sacrifice fly from by Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Tursi singled and tied the game on an RBI single from Sterling to send the game into extra innings.
Three singles and some patience led to the game-winner in the 11th for Haverford as they improved to 11-11 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Sterling went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs in game two. Tursi went 2-for-5 and scored twice and Horan added a 2-for-4 performance in the nightcap.
Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury School) went nine innings, recording seven strikeouts while allowing just two walks and six hits. Zee Crawford (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) came on in relief.
The Red Devils slip to 12-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play. They return home to host Gettysburg College next Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
