(Winchester, Va.) – The Dickinson College baseball team rallied to score four runs in the top of the eighth inning, but fell just short to #23-ranked Shenandoah University on Tuesday afternoon. The Hornets held off the Devils, 12-11, to improve to 8-4 on the season.
Following a lead-off single, the Hornets used a pair of walks and a grand slam homerun to take 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Devils answered with the bats in the top of the scoring, scoring three runs.
Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) led-off the inning with a single and scored off the bat of Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) following a sacrifice bunt from Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area). The Devils added two more runs as Ben Sciambi (Port Monmouth, N.J./Ridge) drew a walk and came around on a homerun by first-year Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive).
Another homerun, a double and a two-run triple added three runs for the Hornets in the bottom of the second. Senior Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) cut the deficit to 7-4 with a solo homer in the third.
Shenandoah added a two-run homer in the fourth and pushed across a pair in the fifth to stretch the lead to 11-4. The Devils kept things interesting, adding three runs in the seventh inning. Kaufman drew a lead-off walk and moved to third on a double by Tuneski. They would both come in to score on a single to right from Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).
The Hornets scored what would prove to be a critical 12th run in the bottom of the seventh as Cory Nelson doubled and scored an unearned run later in the inning.
The Devils rallied again in the eighth, scoring four runs to pull within one, 12-11. Sciambi was hit by a pitch before Tuneski and Joeseph Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll) walked to load the bases. Tursi doubled down the left field line to score two runs.
Tursi and pinch-runner Connor Foote (Narberth, Pa./Lower Marion) came in on a single by senior Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) to bring the Devils within a run.
Dickinson faced just three batters in the bottom of the eighth, closing out the inning with a double-play. Rosa' drew a walk to lead-off the inning, but the Devils couldn't get the tying run across.
Tursi led the Devils at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Tuneski went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Ryan Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) suffered the loss, despite five strikeouts over three innings. Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury School) came on to record five strikeouts while allowing just two hits in the final two innings.
The Red Devils slip to 2-1 on the season. They are scheduled to travel to Lancaster Bible College on Thursday for a 3:30 start.
