Red Devils Roll Past Swarthmore, 14-5

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The #10-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team had 12 players mark the scoring column on Saturday as they posted a 14-5, Centennial Conference win at Swarthmore College.

 

Senior Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) struck twice in the opening five minutes to put the Devils on the board. He scored unassisted at the 13:44 mark and again with 10:57 remaining in the first quarter. Abramson dished out an assist to Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) with 9:36 on the clock to give the Devils a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.

 

The Garnet sandwiched a pair of goals around two scores from the Devils in the second quarter to head into halftime with Dickinson holding a 5-3 advantage. Jonathan Molloy finished an assist from Michael Girardi to put Swarthmore on the board, early in the second period.

 

Junior Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) answered with an assist from senior Richard Craft (Newtown Square, Pa./Episcopal) with 9:44 remaining in the half. Junior Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) made it a 5-1 game, scoring unassisted at the 8:01 mark.

 

Molloy tallied again, with just eight seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to 5-2 at the break.

 

Dickinson struck twice in a span of just 28 seconds in the third to stretch the margin to 7-2 with 11:10 to play in the third quarter. Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) fed senior Sam Greenberg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) and Beitel scored off a pass from senior Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) at the 11:38 and 11:10 marks.

 

Swarthmore answered with a goal from Steve Selverian but Craft responded with a score of his own, 18 seconds later to make the score, 8-3, with 7:35 remaining in the third.

 

Sophomore Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) traded goals with Max Hubbard to close out the quarter with the Devils on top, 9-4.

 

John Bukawyn assisted Hubbard and scored at the 8:20 mark of the fourth for the Garnet's final tally of the afternoon. The Devils closed out the game with a run of five straight, triggered by a beautiful long-stick tally from junior Jack O'Connor (New Vernon, N.J./Delbarton).

 

Sophomore Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) scored back-to-back with a little help from Gruppo and Scott. Craft put one in the back of the net at the 3:09 mark and Nolan Funchion (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle) closed out the scoring with 30 seconds left to play for the final of 14-5.

 

Abramson and Craft each tallied two goals and an assist to lead the attack as 12 different players tallied a goal or an assist on the afternoon.

 

Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and Slay Sudah (Franklin Park, N.Y./St. Joseph) each caused a trio of turnovers on the defensive end and combined for seven ground balls. Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) controlled five GBs while Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) added five GB's and caused a pair of turnovers as well.

 

Junior Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made seven saves, including four in the fourth quarter. Senior Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won 10-of-17 face-offs while Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) claimed 5-of-6 on the day.

 

Molloy led Swarthmore (4-8, 1-4) with a pair of goals. Michael Brockway made five saves in goal for the Garnet, adding five ground balls as well.

 

The #10-ranked Red Devils improve to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg College on Wednesday. The opening face-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
