(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College baseball team swept a key Centennial Conference double-header from visiting Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils held-off a late rally effort to win game one, 2-1. The Devils erased a 2-0 Diplomat lead in the nightcap to complete with sweep with a 5-2 victory.
The Red Devils slammed the door shut in the top of the ninth as the Diplomats looked to rally. The Devils actually went to senior Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury) to close out the game, despite White being the designated starter for game two.
White came on with runners on second and third, following back-to-back doubles from the Diplomats to open the ninth inning. Senior Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) made a fantastic grab at first base to save the hold the tying run at third.
White struck out the next hitter and forced a ground out to second base, securing a key Centennial Conference win in the opener.
Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) singled in the second and came in to score on an RBI double from first-year Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) to put the Devils on the board.
Kaufman tripled in the seventh and scored off a single from sophomore Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) to give the Devils a much needed insurance run.
Kaufman led the offense, going 2-for-3, scoring both runs in the opener. Sophomore Ryan Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) earned the win on the mound, scattering six hits over seven innings while recording three strikeouts. White earned the save in relief as the Devils improve to 18-11 overall and 5-6 in the conference.
The Diplomats broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning of game two, scoring two runs on three base-hits and a sacrifice fly.
The Devils answered in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double by senior Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown). Horan's double was his 14th of the season, tying the school record, set by Ryan Stearrett '07 in 2004 and again in 2006.
Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) led-off the inning with a walk and Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Mt. Kisco) singled to set the table for Horan.
Dickinson tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) singled and Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Sterling singled to score Tuneski before being caught in a run-down on the way to second base. That allowed Tursi to come home, stretching the Devil lead to 4-2.
Rosa' closed out the scoring with a bomb over the right field wall in the eighth inning. That also marked the 100th run of his career, coming in dramatic fashion. He turned in an outstanding game, defensively, as well, making a number of run-saving stops at first base.
White went the distance in the nightcap, improving to 5-1 on the year. He recorded eight strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Rosa' led the way, going 2-for-3 in game two with a run scored and an RBI on the homerun. Sterling went 2-for-4 with a walk, run scored and an RBI while Tuneski finished with a pair of hits as well. Tursi was hit twice in the game, punishing the Diplomats with a run scored in the seventh.
The Red Devils improve to 19-11 overall and pull even in the Centennial Conference at 6-6 on the year. They travel to Muhlenberg on Tuesday and return home to host the Mules on Friday afternoon. Both games are scheduled for 3:30 pm starts.
