Second Half Surge Leads Red Devils Past Mules 15-6

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #9-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team overcame a somewhat slow start to post a 15-6, Centennial Conference win over Muhlenberg on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The feisty Mules struck first and played even with the Devils as the first quarter ended with the score tied, 3-3. First-year George Mazarakis (Montclair, N.J./Kent) struck twice in the quarter while senior Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) tallied a goal and an assist for the Devils.

 

The Devils scored man-down in the second as junior All-American Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) forced a turnover and ran transition, finishing with an assist to midfielder Parker Waldron (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnolen) at the 7:53 mark.

 

Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) ripped a shot into the net with 1:32 to play in the half, putting the Devils up, 5-3. Doug Rheiner fed Jack Reilly for a Mule goal with just 12 seconds on clock to make it a one-goal game at the break.

 

The third quarter was all Red Devils as they took control of the game with a 5-0 run. Sophomore Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) scored all his points in the third, scoring a hat-trick and adding an assist. Senior Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) dished out a pair of assists during the run as well.

 

Muhlenberg kept things interesting, scoring back-to-back at 9:07 and 8:38 to cut the deficit to 10-6. The Devils had seen enough, answering with five straight goals to close out the game. Five different players scored with Marek Laco (Potomac, Md./Landon) picking up an assist to Gruppo.

 

Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won 6-of-8 face-offs, controlled a pair of ground balls and scored a goal. Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) added four wins and three ground balls as well.

 

Abramson finished with a pair of goals and two assists while Cannon added three goals and an assist on the day. Gruppo tallied three assists and a goal while Cherry went 2-1 to record the 100th point of his career. He has tallied 44 goals and handed out 57 assists as a Red Devil.

 

Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) turned in an outstanding performance in the cage, stopping 24 shots, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

 

Reilly led Muhlenberg (2-10, 0-6) with two goals and an assist. James Fasola made 11 saves on the day.

 

The Red Devils travel to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday to face the Diplomats at 4:00 pm.
