(Lancaster, Pa.) – The #9-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10, double-overtime decision to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon.
First-year Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) and junior Christian Beitel (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) sandwiched a pair of goals around tallies from the hosts to end the first quarter with the game tied, 2-2.
F&M went in front, 4-2, scoring twice in the opening three minutes. Beitel scored off an assist from Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) before the Diplomats answered with two more to lead, 6-3, at halftime.
The hosts struck again to open the third period, stretching the lead to 7-3 with 14:04 on the clock. The Red Devils rallied to tie the game, capitalizing on two extra-man goals from Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga). Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) triggered the run, scoring off an assist from Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor).
Leon finished an assist from Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) to cut the lead to 7-5. Beital put away the second assist of the game for Richard Craft (Newtown Square, Pa./Episcopal) and Leon tied things up with another helper from Cannon at the 2:09 mark of the third quarter.
A.J. Reichert found the back of the net with 31 seconds left in the quarter to put F&M back in front, 8-7.
Leon tallied his third extra-man goal of the game, this time scoring off an assist from Cherry. Colin McKew answered to make it 9-8 with 8:47 to play in the game.
Leon came through again, less than a minute later, to make it even once again. Reichert delivered the next punch, scoring at the 6:14 mark.
The Devils were getting opportunities, but couldn't net the equalizer. With 23 seconds remaining, senior Bobby Kingsley (Bethesda, Md./St. Albans) came through, finishing an assist from Cannon to force overtime.
The teams played through a scoreless four minutes, sending the game into the second extra frame. The Diplomats would strike last as Reichert fired one into the cage, 51 seconds into the period.
The Red Devils slip to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial Conference. F&M improved to 9-5 overall and 4-4 in the CC.
Leon led the attack with four goals, including three on EMOs. Beitel tallied a hat-trick, scoring three goals. Sophomore Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) caused four turnovers and picked-up four ground balls, to anchor the defense.
Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) caused three turnovers and picked-up a pair of ground balls. Junior goaltender Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made eight saves and controlled five ground balls. Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won 7-of-14 face-offs on the day.
The Red Devils return home to face Gettysburg College next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
